Nathalie paused, her expression flickering as she joked, “Why do you sound more worked up about this than I am?”

There was a moment of silence from the other end. Fabian’s voice finally came through, sounding tired. “Hey, I just can’t stand seeing you being treated badly. Besides… I’m still waiting for you to be single so I can make my move.”

Nathalie’s eyelid twitched. “Fabian, don’t joke about stuff like that.”

Fabian started laughing right away. “Really? You believed me? Relax, I’m just messing with you, but seriously, it kills me to see you upset. We can’t do ‘much except wait for now. But I don’t trust Lance. There’s no way he’ll wait quietly for the hearing. Maybe this time was just a fluke, but next time, he might actually do something crazy.”

“Alright, I hear you.”

Nathalie responded, but she didn’t overthink it. She knew the attack was aimed at her. There was no way Lance could’ve planned for it ahead of

time.

She hung up and started toward the hospital room, but then her phone rang again. This time it was Nicol, and his voice was unusually serious. “Ms. Blair, do you have a few minutes? I need to see you.”

Her heart skipped a beat. “Did you find something about that first

situation we talked about?”

“Yeah.”

Nathalie took a steadying breath. “Okay. I’ll pick a place… you can come find me.”

“Alright.”

The teahouse was filled with the gentle scent of tea. Every private room

was spaced well apart, and the windows let her look outside, making her feel safe there, like no one would be able to eavesdrop.

Nicol walked in, glancing around. “Ms. Blair, how’d you find this place? It’s nice.”

Nathalie smiled softly. “I came here once with someone else.”

She waved at the seat across from her. “Have a seat. Take a sip of tea, no rush.”

But Nicol just shook his head. “Tea isn’t really my thing. Let me just tell you what I found.”

He checked around the room before leaning in a little. “The people who attacked you, they were from out of the country. Two men. They snuck in, didn’t bring much ammunition, used it all that night and took off. I couldn’t catch them, but I checked the area around the care facility and also your mother’s phone records. As I kept digging, I found out your mother knows the director of the facility. Turns out, just before everything happened, the director was in touch with someone else too.”

He paused, his expression complicated as he looked at her.

Nathalie’s heart started pounding. That look on his face… did that mean she knew the person involved?

She pressed. “It’s okay. You can just say it.”

Nicol looked at her and nodded. “The director contacted Fabian.”
