Nicol looked even more serious than usual. “I sent people to Hillcrest Village. They tracked down some of the folks who were there during the earthquake. At first, nobody wanted to talk. Some even pretended they didn’t remember you. But I could see right through them. After I put on a bit of pressure, one man finally cracked and told me everything.”
He paused for a second, watching her face. “He said that when the earthquake hit, you and the other students were inside Hope Primary School. He was the night guard. Everyone else was running out as fast as they could, but you went the other way. He called you back a few times, but you didn’t stop. You ran inside and, not long after, came out carrying a boy on your back. You didn’t make it far before you passed out. Luckily, right then, the shaking stopped. Some people rushed in and pulled both of you out. That’s the only reason you weren’t buried.”
Nathalie’s pulse sped up until she could feel it thudding in her chest. She gripped the file in her hands so hard her knuckles turned white. “Did he say who the boy was? Did he say if it was Lance?”
Nicol frowned, thinking. “That’s all he remembered. But he did mention something else. Someone told him never to talk about it. That person was Lance.”
For a moment, Nathalie just stared at the papers in her hand. Then she crushed them into a tight ball.
It was Lance. Lance was the one who’d told that man to hide what really happened?
Why would he do that?
Was he just trying to help Felice lie to her? Had he really believed Felice when she claimed she saved him? He’d gone so far as to fake evidence for her, to make everyone else believe it too.
Nathalie’s eyes burned with fury.
Chapter 320
She had risked her life to save him, but he’d chosen to believe Felice instead.
Thinking about all the things he’d done lately, she just felt hollow and ridiculous. She really couldn’t figure him out at all.
It didn’t matter now. If his heart already belonged to Felice, she’d help him get what he wanted. They were going to end up together eventually,
right? She’d just make it happen sooner.
“Ms. Blair, are you alright?” Nicol asked, worry clear on his face as he took in her clenched jaw and narrowed eyes.
“I’m fine,” Nathalie said quietly.
She had to breathe deeply, more than once, before her head cleared a little. “Keep investigating. I want the whole story about what happened during that earthquake. I want proof I saved him. I want to know what Felice was even doing there. And I want confirmation they faked the whole thing together. I want every last detail.”
“Understood.” Nicol nodded, his voice steady. He still had people searching for more witnesses, not just the guard. Someone else would talk, sooner or later. This was just the first bit of news. He hoped it wasn’t too soon to tell her.
Nathalie slowly tore the file into tiny pieces. “Thank you. I mean it.”
Nicol gave a teasing little grin. “No need to thank me, Ms. Blair. I’m your bodyguard now. Watching out for you–this is what I’m here for.”
Nathalie climbed out of the car and started toward the hospital in a daze. The cold wind against her cheeks woke her up and helped steel her resolve.
She wouldn’t hesitate about Madonna’s idea any longer.
A week passed.
Madonna called. “Nathalie, we’re headed for the cemetery. Want to join
