The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 50

“Ha.” Nathalie let out a sharp, cold laugh. “Everyone already knows. I’ve been the butt of their jokes more times than I can count. Do you think I have anything left to care about?”

Lance’s brow furrowed. “Knows what, exactly?”

The hint of a smile disappeared from Nathalie’s face. She tried to pull away, but his arms only tightened around her. “You and Felice. Did you really think no one noticed? Lance, you’ve tossed my dignity to the ground for others to step on, and now you expect me to believe you don’t know a thing?”

Lance’s face grew even more serious. “I genuinely had no idea. I’ll get someone to check it out. They’re all spreading rumors. You won’t have to hear anything like that again.”

Nathalie suddenly just felt tired. He might be able to silence their words, but their eyes—the way they looked at her—were impossible to quiet. Everyone could see clearly where his heart was.

Everyone could see how gentle he was with Felice.

Now, she was nothing but decoration.

“Wire me the money,” Nathalie said, her voice flat. “Or I’ll make sure the whole story gets out. You can shut up other people, but you sure can’t shut me up.”

Lance just stared at her, caught between anger and helplessness. He looked at her expressionless face and finally gave in. “Alright.”

That helped. Nathalie felt the tightness in her chest ease up a bit. “Let go. I’m hungry. I want something to eat.”

“I’ll go with you.”

He still didn’t let her go, holding her close as they walked through the room together.

People around them noticed.

It didn’t take Nathalie long to understand what this was all about. He was showing everyone how close they still were. Was he trying to prove the gossip about him and Felice was just that—gossip?

Yeah, right.

He really knew how to play things to his advantage.

Her heart only felt colder. “If you expect me to act like we’re fine, that comes with a price,” she said bluntly.

Again, Lance frowned. “Act? What are you even talking about?”

They were married. Being together wasn't supposed to be some kind of show.

The kids, though, darted right into her path. Nathalie frowned. “Don’t play here,” she said, her voice firm.

The kids all glanced at her, but none of them listened. They just kept chasing each other, shrieking with laughter.

“Nathalie…”

Jasper ran up, trying to hide behind her, but she had no patience for his games. She brushed past and started down the stairs.

But just as she stepped down, Jasper suddenly slipped past her and went tumbling down.

A scream pierced the air.

Someone rushed forward and caught Jasper at the bottom of the stairs, but he was already unconscious.

The room erupted into chaos.

A pale-faced maid blurted out, “I... I saw her kick Jasper.”
