Seeing how terrified her friend was, Nathalie quickly tried to soothe her. "Alright, don't spiral. He didn't see you, and he still doesn't know where you are."
Damaris looked at her, her lips trembling. "He's looking so hard for me... Is getting married really going to work?"
Nathalie lowered her eyes. "We're just gambling on the probability. Once you're legally married, he shouldn't entertain those thoughts anymore."
Damaris's face scrunched up. A deep sense of unease settled into her stomach, and the sheer anxiety suddenly made her violently nauseous.
Clamping a hand over her mouth, she bolted for the nearest bathroom and started dry heaving over the sink.
Alarmed, Nathalie hurried after her with a bottle of water. Watching her friend gag so violently, a new wave of panic washed over Nathalie.
"Damaris, have you gotten your period yet?"
Damaris rinsed her mouth before answering, "It's not time yet. I'm not due for another week."
She gripped the water bottle tightly, her knuckles turning white as she looked at Nathalie with sheer panic. "Nathalie, what are you saying? Please don't scare me like that."
Nathalie stepped closer. "You just got so nauseous out of nowhere. I'm just worried that maybe..."
"Impossible!"
Damaris shook her head frantically. "There is no way. I distinctly remember seeing several used condoms on the floor, so I couldn't possibly be pregnant."
Her face burned red as she was forced to recall the fragmented memories of that night, her eyes darting away in embarrassment.
Hearing this, Nathalie let out a massive sigh of relief. "Thank god. Getting pregnant right now would be an absolute disaster. Everything is chaotic enough as it is."
Damaris nodded vigorously. "I know. It's definitely not that. Besides, I took the morning-after pill just to be safe."
She nervously gulped down more water, and the nausea finally subsided entirely.
Once they left the bathroom, Nathalie dragged her back into the living room to play cards with Grandma.
The old lady was incredibly enthusiastic, and slowly, Damaris's nerves began to unspool, replacing her fear with genuine laughter.
That evening, the housekeeper prepped the guest bedroom. Nathalie walked her over and said, "You sleep here tonight. Tomorrow morning, Lance will have someone drive you home. I'll come visit you there, but seriously, no more field trips."
Damaris nodded. "Got it. I promise."
She grabbed Nathalie's hand. "Nathalie, sleep in here with me tonight."
Nathalie agreed easily. "Sure. Let me just go take a quick shower first."
