The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 55

Lance sat in his car and pulled out his phone, dialing Bagot.

“Hey, Lance, what’s up?” Bagot answered with a loud clatter on his end, like he was in the middle of a crowd.

Lance’s tone was all business. “Where are you?”

Bagot could tell something was off, so he rattled off his location right away.

“Come to the Adams Estate now. Bring your gear.” Lance didn’t wait for a reply, just hung up.

A moment later, he glanced out the window and saw Nathalie coming out of the Adams Estate. Her face was so pale she looked about ready to pass out. She was moving so slowly, her body swaying a little, like she might topple over any second.

Lance gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. Thinking back on everything that happened tonight made his chest clench. Then, out of nowhere, he slammed his fist down hard on the wheel.

What was she thinking? Was she actually trying to punish herself like this?

His eyes fixed on her, cold and intense, and he just sat there watching until he finally grabbed his phone and made another quick call. “Send a few taxis to patrol the area around her,” he said.

Nathalie had made it past the estate grounds and was waiting at the roadside. She stuck out her hand, flagged a cab, and got in. It all happened quickly, but Lance caught every second.

Not long after, Bagot finally showed up, breathless as he slid into the passenger seat. “Man, what’s going on? You sounded like it was urgent.”

Lance barely looked at him. His handsome face was like stone, eyes sharp and cold. “Hack the Adams Estate’s surveillance. I want today’s entire footage.”

Bagot blinked. “Wait, hack our own system?”

Lance’s look got even frostier. “Did you not understand?”

Bagot snapped out of it and fired up his laptop. “Okay, okay, but at least give me a hint what’s going on?”

Lance’s face darkened, and he pressed his fingertips to his temples, looking like he was about to explode. Then he picked up his phone and said, “Send me a list of the kids who were with Jasper tonight.”

Bagot was totally lost now. “Lance, can you tell me what actually happened?”

Lance finally glanced over. “Do you think Nathalie could hurt a child?”

“Not a chance.” Bagot answered without even thinking. “She’s wild, yeah, but she loves animals and kids. She’d never hurt one, not in a million years.”

Then his eyes shifted, and he asked, a little more hesitantly, “Wait… did Jasper get hurt? And someone’s blaming Nathalie?”

Lance closed his eyes, jaw tight, his voice low and rough. “She admitted to it.”

Bagot could only gape. “No way...”
