The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 567

A twinge of disappointment flickered in Sophia's heart, but the thought that Nathalie might end up genuinely happy brought a smile back to her face.

Adelaide stared at the television and suddenly asked, "Sophia, do you have your phone on you?"

Sophia hesitated for a moment, instantly recalling Nathalie's instructions.

If the old lady asked for a phone, she was to give it to her.

She nodded and pulled out her device. "Yes, Grandma. Do you need to call someone? Do you remember the number? I can dial it for you."

Adelaide took the phone and slipped on her reading glasses. With a trembling finger, she carefully tapped in a string of digits.

But she couldn't bring herself to hit the call button.

Her finger just hovered there, shaking uncontrollably.

Watching this, Sophia felt a sharp ache in her chest.

Adelaide looked entirely overwhelmed, acting as if the person on the other end of that number was someone she both desperately loved and deeply resented.

After a long, agonizing pause, Adelaide handed the phone back.

"Never mind."

She pulled her glasses off and returned her attention to the TV.

But Sophia could practically feel the suffocating wave of sorrow radiating from her.

Glancing at her screen, Sophia noticed the number hadn't been deleted. She made a mental note to dial it later and find out exactly who this person was to Adelaide.

If she could, she wanted to invite them over for a visit.

It had to be better than watching the old lady suffer in silence like this.

...

Bagot hadn't expected Lance and Nathalie to show up.

When he saw them, he clearly froze for a second before flashing a bright smile. "Nathalie! You taking a break from work?"

Nathalie replied warmly, "I'm doing alright. How's your recovery coming along?"

"I'm completely fine!" Bagot slapped his own chest. "I eat like a horse and feel like a million bucks!"

She always acted tough and carefree, but he knew she was easily frightened.

Just thinking about her made Bagot's chest ache.

If he had known everything was going to fall apart like this, he would have confessed his feelings to her years ago. He would have shamelessly chased after her until she realized he was the only man for her!

A bitter taste flooded his mouth, but it only hardened his resolve.

The sparring session commenced.

The two men squared off, eyes locked onto each other with burning intensity.

Nathalie sat on the sidelines, watching with rapt attention.

But almost immediately, she realized she had grossly underestimated the situation.

Their movements were blindingly fast, a total blur of motion. Before her brain could even process what was happening, Bagot was flat on the mat.

Nicol reached down and hauled him up with a grin. "Buddy, you're still a little sluggish. Gotta keep training."
