The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 573

Lance frowned at her, and the eyes of everyone in the room shifted to her tearful face.

Nathalie lowered her gaze slightly and said in a calm voice, "Sophia didn't mean any harm, and she won't do it again. Grandma feels relaxed and comfortable with her around."

Hearing this, Lance's frown deepened.

Sophia quickly bowed in gratitude. "Thank you, Nathalie. I promise I won't let you down. I'll take great care of Grandma."

Nathalie nodded. "Alright, go back to your work. If anything like this happens again, just come to me."

"I will."

Sophia nodded eagerly.

She shot Lance a timid glance before turning and hurrying away.

Nathalie looked at him, noticing the lingering frost in his expression. "I'm going to check on Grandma."

She walked straight toward Adelaide's room.

Lance watched her walk away, his brow furrowing again. He pulled out his phone, fired off a message to Aaron, and then turned to leave.

...

Adelaide wasn't asleep. Nathalie walked over, sat by the bed, and took her grandmother's warm, dry hand.

"Grandma, ever since you woke up, you haven't mentioned her once. I kept thinking that maybe you wanted to see her, or ask her something. But you saw her today, and it seemed like you didn't have much to say. Can you tell me what's on your mind?"

Her voice was slow and measured. Nathalie didn't rush her. The older woman looked out the window, her cloudy eyes holding a lifetime of sorrow.

"But then I thought about it. Ever since she met Winnie as a teenager, she hasn't been close to me. Later, she practically lived by Winnie's side. Maybe even back then, she saw Winnie as her real mother, and I was just someone she could take or leave."

Hearing this made a lump form in Nathalie's throat. She squeezed her grandmother's hand tightly.

"That's not true."

"But to her, it is," Adelaide said calmly. Having weathered decades of life's storms, she had long since made peace with the past.

Nathalie felt even worse, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. Her resentment toward Camilla only deepened.

Adelaide let out a melancholy sigh. "I kept hesitating. I just kept wondering—how do I ask her? What do I even ask? But seeing her today, seeing how sickly and pale she looked, I suddenly didn't want to say anything. Her time is running out, too."
