Bagot slammed his cup down, glaring at Nicol indignantly. "What is your problem? Why are you always picking on me? Even if something was wrong with the tea, I'd be the one drinking it first. Nathalie wouldn't be in danger."
"If you go down, how long do you think it'll be before she does?" Nicol shot back.
"Why are you always jinxing us?"
"I'm not jinxing anything. We're being targeted. If we aren't careful, we'll lose our lives."
The two men bickered back and forth.
Nathalie sighed, turned up the volume on her phone, and hit play on a typed message.
"Shut up."
Both men froze. Nicol sneered, and Bagot huffed before turning to Nathalie. "Did you notice something off, Nathalie?"
Nathalie lowered the volume. "We wait until we see Elara Lane. Don't touch anything until then."
"Got it." Bagot obediently complied.
Nathalie realized she was feeling incredibly weak, too. She tried to push herself off the sofa but had no strength left. Her heart sank. It was a trap. They had been drugged. Even with her precautions, they still fell into a trap.
Her vision blurred. Nathalie bit her lip hard, using the sharp pain to cling to consciousness. She looked over and saw Nicol and Bagot already passed out.
"You've got a strong constitution," a mocking voice rang out, and a young woman walked down the stairs. Nathalie tried to focus, but her vision was too hazy to make out anything more than a blurry silhouette. She opened her mouth to demand answers, but no sound came out. The next second, her eyes rolled back, and she passed out.
A moment later, the middle-aged woman stepped out from the back, asking nervously, "Ellie... are you sure about this?"
