The hospital room fell into a heavy silence, broken only by the soft rustle of gauze being unwound. Nathalie stood off to the side, her breathing tight with anxiety.
Elara carefully examined Lance’s eyes. She used a cotton swab to collect a tiny sample of the ointment applied to them, sniffed it, and studied it for a moment. “This medication only provides temporary pain relief. It doesn’t do absolutely anything to help your vision recover.”
Lance’s expression remained completely unreadable. “Do you have a better solution, Dr. Lane?” “Of course I do.”
Elara tossed the cotton swab into the trash, carefully re-wrapped the fresh gauze around his eyes, and pulled up a chair. She sat down and boldly grabbed his wrist to check his pulse.
Lance’s fingers twitched instinctively.
“Don’t hit me, I’m just taking your pulse!” Elara blurted out, quickly picking up on his defensive shift. “Right.”
Lance murmured his acknowledgment and forced his hand to relax.
Seeing his muscles loosen, Elara breathed a sigh of relief. She glanced over at Nathalie and casually remarked, “Your husband is so intimidating. How do you deal with him?”
Lance’s brow twitched. Did she seriously just ask that right in front of him?
Wasn’t that a little bold?
Nathalie’s eyes flickered, but she offered no response.
After checking the pulse on both of his wrists, Elara nodded. “I have a solid treatment plan mapped out. Moving forward, I’ll use a combination of acupuncture and a specialized medicinal tonic to initiate a deep detox. Your treatment process will be identical to your wife’s. We’ll flush the toxins out first and see where we stand.”
“Thank you.”
Lance’s tone softened slightly. “I’ll have my executive assistant contact you.”
Elara’s eyes instantly lit up. “Are we talking about a check? Wow, do I get to fill in the amount myself?”
Lance said, “Cure the both of us, and you can have whatever you want.”
Elara’s eyes practically turned into dollar signs as she rubbed her hands together. “Yes! I will absolutely give this my all. Once I cure you two, I’m achieving total financial freedom!”
With that, she bounced out of the room to track down the hospital doctors for Lance’s previous medical reports.
“Nat.”
Lance called out her name softly.
09:20
“Mm.”
Nathalie made a soft sound of acknowledgment to let him know she hadn’t left.
Following the sound, Lance turned his face toward her, his voice dropping into a tender octave “Were you scared yesterday?”
Nathalie typed on her phone. “I’m fine.”
As long as she was still breathing, as long as she was alive, there was hope.
And as it turned out, yesterday’s chaos had all been a massive misunderstanding.
Lance said, “I had my people run a background check on her. Everything she said is true.”
Nathalie hummed in agreement.
“Nat.”
“Mm.”
“Nat.”
“Nat.”
Nathalie closed her eyes briefly. The cold robotic voice that followed somehow perfectly conveyed
her helpless exhaustion. “What exactly do you want to say?”
