Chapter 763
Nathalie nodded and slipped under the covers.
Lance reached the edge of the bed and sat down. Tilting his head slightly in her direction, he said, “I can tell something is off with you tonight. Did something happen to upset you?”
Watching a video on her phone, Nathalie simply typed back, “No.”
Lance’s brow furrowed slightly before he pulled the covers back and lay down next to her. He shifted closer, pulling her flush against his side and wrapping a strong arm around her waist.
Nathalie stiffened instantly and pushed his hand away.
“Nathalie?”
His voice carried a genuine note of confusion. “I’m not trying to do anything. Can’t I even hold you?”
She looked at him, easily reading the unmistakable loneliness etched across his strikingly handsome features, but she still shifted a few inches away.
She typed on her phone, “We don’t need to force this level of intimacy.”
Silence stretched between them. Slowly, Lance pulled his arm back, his voice dropping into a somber register. “I just wanted to hold you. Once my vision is restored, I know I won’t have the privilege anymore.”
A heavy quiet settled over the bedroom.
Nathalie didn’t respond. She watched her video for a few more minutes before turning off the lamp and going to sleep.
As her breathing deepened and sleep finally pulled her under, she felt the mattress shift. A warm, solid chest pressed against her back.
He wrapped his arms around her again.
Nathalie was simply too exhausted to fight him on it.
Nathalie threw herself into her training, and Elara Lane seemed more excited about it than anyone.
While Nathalie ran drills, Elara sat on the sidelines, watching with intense fascination.
When Nathalie hit the target dead center during shooting practice, Elara clapped enthusiastically.
“You’re amazing, babe!”
