The elevator doors slid open, and someone waiting outside paused, looking startled by what they walked in on before finally stepping inside.
Nathalie quickly turned her focus elsewhere, acting like nothing was happening.
With the mirrored walls, you couldn’t escape anyone’s reactions. From her spot, Nathalie could watch the newcomer’s obvious curiosity play out. After all, Lance and Nathalie were standing on opposite sides, yet somehow still holding hands. Their arms stretched across the air between them, as if refusing to let go even when it made no sense at all. The whole scene was almost comical.
It was so strange, the person looked ready to snap a photo just to prove they hadn't imagined it. But as soon as Lance gave them a cold, unblinking stare, they flinched and dropped the idea, eyes pinned to their phone instead. They kept their head down, scrolling nervously, and didn’t glance their way again.
When they finally hit the ground floor, the stranger darted out, practically running. From a distance, Nathalie still heard excited whispers on a voice message. “Guys, you’re not going to believe what I just saw…”
All Nathalie could do was stand there, a silent sigh caught in her chest. She tried tugging her hand free again, but Lance wouldn’t let go. He stayed quiet, stubborn, refusing to let her go. Her patience wore thin.
It wasn’t until the car stopped at a pharmacy that things shifted. Lance stepped out, then came back with a small bag of ice.
He took her hand gently and placed the ice pack right in her palm. The sudden chill made her fingers twitch.
She looked at him. “What are you doing?”
Lance’s eyes dropped to her red hand, his face clouded. “Give it a minute, the pain should go away.”
Nathalie’s eyes glimmered, conflicted. “You’re something else, you know that?”
Moments ago, he’d all but accused her of hurting Felice. Now he was here, taking care of her, trying to ease her pain. How did he manage to be so all over the place?
Lance met her gaze. “You had a point earlier. If you were really going to hit someone, you wouldn’t do it halfway. You’d make sure they felt it, you’d keep going until they were crying for real.”
Her lips pressed together.
She didn’t answer, just kept her gaze low. “Open the door.”
She didn’t want to argue anymore. There was no point. She’d already introduced Maggie to him. Maggie was set to start work at his office tomorrow, and after that, it was just a matter of time. Once Maggie won him over, she and Lance could finally get their divorce.
Across from her, Lance felt the all-too-familiar tightness in his chest. He loosened his collar, his tone heavier than before. “Where are you going? Let me drive you.”
“I don’t need a ride.”
“I’m taking you anyway.”
Their stubbornness clashed, neither one willing to budge. Silence hung between them, both too proud, too tired, to give in.
Lance gave her a long, measured look. He didn’t push it any further, just started the engine and pulled out into the street, heading toward Lumina Grand.
