Preston walked straight ahead.
Jenna chased after him. "Preston, where are you going? You haven't recovered yet. Let me take you home to rest..."
Preston didn't look back. "I'm going to find Chloe."
Jenna's eyes shifted. She gritted her teeth and said, "I'll go with you."
"No need," Preston said, looking at her with an unreadable expression. "Go home by yourself."
"Preston?" Jenna stared in disbelief.
She grabbed his sleeve, her eyes instantly reddening as she put on a pitiful display.
"Preston, did Chloe say something to you? Is she misunderstanding our relationship again? Did you two fight because of this?"
"I really don't know what to say anymore. I don't understand why her head is so full of romantic drama. Can't men and women just have a pure friendship? Or is it because she simply has zero trust in you..."
"Jenna."
Preston cut her off, his gaze fixing on her. "Whatever the case, Chloe is unhappy right now."
"So, for the time being, stop coming to see me."
With that, he pulled his arm away and walked off without looking back.
Jenna stood frozen in place, staring at his retreating back for a long time.
Before Preston even reached Chloe's building, he saw police officers and a crowd gathered outside. It looked like a scene had broken out.
His heart sank heavily, and he quickly pushed his way through the onlookers.
He instantly spotted two officers escorting Chloe toward the patrol cars.
The blood rushed straight to Preston's head. He practically lunged forward, planting himself firmly in front of Chloe to shield her.
"What do you think you're doing?" one of the officers barked.
Preston ignored him. He leaned in, locking eyes with Chloe, and lowered his voice soothingly.
Preston's dark eyes turned terrifyingly bleak as his heart pounded with a sense of dread.
Pushing through his lingering weakness, he sprinted to his car and sped after them.
The police cruiser pulled up to the Sterling Bay hospital.
Leon was waiting outside a ward. The moment he saw the officers, he jumped up.
"Officers, you're finally here!"
The two cops looked at him. "You're the one who called this in?"
"Yes! That was me!" Leon pointed a furious finger at Chloe. "It's her! She abandoned her own mother! Linda collapsed and had to be hospitalized, and this woman just watched her hit the floor and walked away without even looking back! She didn't even pick up the phone afterward!"
"Officers, look at her! She lives in one of Sterling Bay's top luxury penthouses, living a life of absolute wealth, yet she couldn't care less if her own mother lived or died. It's an outrage for someone to be this ungrateful!"
The officer frowned slightly and looked at Chloe. "Do you have anything to say?"
