The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 278

"Once you two have a baby, he'll naturally realize where his heart truly lies."

"...What?"

Jenna paused, a sudden glint shining in her eyes. She lowered her head, pretending to hesitate. "Grandpa, I don't think that's a good idea."

"We're just doing what's best for him," Percival replied.

...

In the side parlor.

Eleonora rested on the sofa and hit the play button on the voice recorder.

A familiar, flowing, stream-like female voice began to play, instantly smoothing out all her lingering irritation. Her expression softened.

Hearing Chloe's voice, Preston immediately came downstairs.

Percival, who happened to be nearby, was also drawn by the sound and reached the sofa first. "Eleonora, where did you get an audio clip of Caroline Monet?"

Eleonora turned her head away. "Step back, stop bothering me."

Percival leaned in closer. "Tell me, I've never heard this segment before. Where did you find it?"

Eleonora frowned in annoyance. "Chloe recorded it for me. Leave me alone."

"Chloe?"

Percival was stunned for a moment before he realized she meant Chloe Reed. "This is her voice?"

He was in total disbelief, almost doubting his own ears.

Now that he knew it was Chloe's voice, he listened more carefully and could indeed catch some subtle differences.

He used to watch Caroline Monet's programs religiously, confident he knew her voice better than anyone.

He kicked himself. How could he possibly confuse Caroline's voice with Chloe's?

It must be because it had been too long since he last heard it.

Otherwise, how could he make such a mistake?

Preston sighed helplessly, holding her arm and gently massaging her shoulders. "Grandma, please stop being mad at me. I was just..."

He lowered his eyes, hiding his desolation, and sighed. "I'll bring Chloe back tomorrow. Promise me you won't say those things anymore, okay?"

Eleonora said nothing.

Preston continued, "Grandma, did Chloe really record this? I never realized she spoke French this flawlessly. It doesn't even sound like her."

"That's because you never actually cared about her."

Eleonora brushed his hands away, her tone turning cold. "Or rather, in your heart, you never saw her as your equal. You never truly looked at her."

"How could that be?" Preston laughed, playing along. "I've just been too busy these past few years. Sometimes I might have neglected her or failed to understand her deeply enough..."

"Grandma, did Chloe ever mention her work to you?"

Eleonora wasn't buying it. "What's the point of asking now? Where were you before?"

Preston gave a helpless smile. Suddenly remembering the envelope in his pocket, he pulled it out. "By the way, Chloe asked someone to pass this to you. Let's open it together."
