The suggestion was so sudden that it caught everyone in the dining room completely off guard. Total silence fell over the room.
Jenna's heart pounded wildly. Her eyes went wide with a mix of shock and pure joy.
Fighting to suppress her overwhelming excitement, she feigned composure. "Grandma, why would you say that all of a sudden?"
Percival immediately nodded in agreement. "I think it's a great idea! Preston, I'm completely on the same page as your grandmother!"
"Jenna is a wonderful girl. She's a blessing to the Hayes family. You two already had feelings for each other. Sure, there were some missteps along the way, but you found each other again. That's destiny."
Jenna couldn't stop the corners of her mouth from rising. As she listened, her heart soared, all while she discreetly watched Preston's reaction.
Preston's expression remained indifferent. "Grandma, you shouldn't make jokes like that."
Eleonora's voice was heavy. "I'm not joking."
Preston's demeanor finally shifted, a slight frown creasing his forehead. "I thought you adored Chloe? What's the meaning of this? Aren't you worried you'll break her heart?"
Eleonora lost whatever appetite she had left and put down her silverware. "It's exactly because I care about Chloe that I want you to marry Miss Cameron."
Preston paused, letting out an exasperated chuckle. "The way you say it, it sounds like anyone who marries me is doomed."
"Are you even my grandmother? Am I really that awful in your eyes?"
Since they were already on the subject, Eleonora didn't hold back. Her tone was measured, every word carrying a complex recognition of her grandson.
"Preston, you are the most outstanding, disciplined leader of the Hayes family. You're ruthless in business, and flawless in your responsibilities to family and friends. As a grandson, a son, a brother, and a best friend, you've handled every role impeccably."
"But when it comes to being a husband, you are simply not the right man for her."
Preston frowned, whether out of disagreement or sheer lack of comprehension.
"Did Chloe tell you that?" He scoffed. "What exactly did she say to you? She never talks to me. Why don't you relay it so I can hear where I'm falling short?"
"Companionship, money, respect, understanding, I've done better than most men out there."
Percival noticed Jenna's dejection and offered some comfort. "Don't worry, Jenna. Preston will absolutely marry you."
He narrowed his eyes, speaking with certainty. "He only feels a sense of obligation toward Chloe. Plus, he's a man who believes in only marrying once. That's why he refuses to get a divorce. But in his heart, the one he truly loves has always been you."
Jenna felt a flicker of panic. "But, Grandpa..."
She always had this nagging feeling that Preston's emotions toward Chloe weren't that simple.
It didn't feel like mere gratitude.
So many of his subtle reactions went completely beyond how one should treat someone who simply saved their life.
More often than not, he didn't even seem to realize how deeply he cared about Chloe.
Percival set down his glass and said smoothly, "Don't worry.
