A voice in the back of his mind spoke with crystal clarity.
*Preston, you are finished. She will never forgive you this time.*
...
Chloe tried desperately to steady her breathing. Preston's behavior was completely erratic, and it was impossible not to jump to the worst conclusion: something terrible had happened to Yuri.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated with a call from an unknown number.
She answered it immediately. "Hello?"
A blood-curdling, agonizing dog's scream ripped through the speaker. It was a horrific, piercing sound.
Chloe's heart leapt into her throat. It was Yuri!
"Who is this?"
"Chloe, who the hell do you think it is?" a twisted, venomous male voice spat back.
The sheer malice in the tone made Chloe hesitate for a fraction of a second before the realization hit her. "Leon... Leon Rivers?"
"Wow, you figured it out that fast! You must have a guilty conscience!"
Chloe gripped the phone, forcing herself to stay rational. "What do you want?"
"What do I want?" Leon roared, followed by another agonizing yelp from the dog. "I hear you treat this mutt like absolute royalty. Tsk. What is wrong with you, Chloe? How can someone be such a cold-blooded ingrate?"
"I'm your family! You sat back and watched me get backed into a corner, refusing to help me pay off my debts, yet you treat a damn dog better than your own flesh and blood! Are you out of your mind?"
"You have money to burn on a dog, but you can't pay off my debts? If it weren't for Linda and me, do you really think you'd be sitting in the lap of luxury? You owe us your life!"
Leon's tone turned venomous. "Chloe, you only get to play the rich man's wife because of me and Linda. Got it?"
"Did you honestly believe you were good enough for a golden boy like Preston Hayes? Take a look in the mirror! Why would he ever look twice at you?"
"Did you really think risking your life to save him was enough to win his heart? You stupid girl."
"Back then, his family was just going to throw a pile of cash at you to make you go away! Linda and I were the ones who showed up at their door. Do you have any idea how much effort it took to force Preston to marry you?"
He knew exactly how to inflict maximum psychological damage, and his laughter grew increasingly manic.
"You looked so pathetic smiling at your wedding, actually believing you had found true love. Believing he had feelings for you?"
"Did you ever bother looking at his face? What do you think he was really thinking when he looked at you? Huh?"
