Lydia's eyes flickered. "I do..."
"I just think about all the advice I gave you before, and I feel a bit ridiculous. Chloe, I really didn't expect you to be this amazing. I made so many assumptions."
Chloe's smile deepened slightly. "Not at all. I appreciate it, thank you for caring about me."
"Really?" Lydia let out a sigh of relief, but then couldn't help asking, "But... with your skills, why are you working as an assistant?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, she suddenly realized something and hurriedly added, "Sorry, sorry, I forgot."
Chloe's tone was calm. "It's fine, it's the truth."
Looking at her, Lydia felt a strong wave of regret.
She had only been transferred up in recent years. Though she regretted never having seen the legendary Caroline Monet in person, the woman standing in front of her was already enough to leave her in awe.
She felt that if Chloe's hearing were perfect, she definitely wouldn't lose to Caroline.
After finishing her coffee, Chloe went home.
Quentin called her. "I heard you solved a major crisis for the institute today?"
Chloe watered her plants as she spoke. "Weren't you out in meetings? How did you get the news so fast?"
Quentin asked, "So, are you taking it?"
At the mention of the upcoming event, Chloe pursed her lips. "Yes, I am."
For an unofficial event like this, especially with a prepared speech, she was confident in herself.
She was already prepared. Even if her ears were never cured and she could never do simultaneous interpretation again, she could at least take on other gigs.
"Congratulations, you're one step closer to Caroline Monet."
Quentin's voice carried a hint of a smile. "By the way, I should be home around eleven tonight."
"Alright." Chloe didn't understand why he was reporting his schedule to her, but she acknowledged it anyway.
The next day.
Chloe walked into the interpretation institute just like any other day.
But the moment the elevator doors opened, she sensed something was off.
The people in the hallway actively avoided her gaze as they saw her.
A few who had been whispering amongst themselves immediately shut their mouths the moment they caught sight of her, pretending to be busy with their own tasks.
"Lydia," Chloe interrupted, her voice entirely calm. "I understand."
Lydia was stunned. "You... aren't you angry?"
Chloe didn't answer the question. She simply picked up the document on her desk, flipped through two pages, and said lightly, "Thank you."
The reason for the switch was self-evident.
What else could it be?
Chloe had been mentally prepared for this for a long time. The road back was destined to be arduous, so she wouldn't let herself get angry or feel wronged over this.
But after Lydia left, she still involuntarily opened a search engine and typed in the name "Isabella Sylvain".
Almost immediately, the results popped up. A string of headlines followed the name:
[The youngest genius female interpreter, powerful background, high IQ, high talent...]
[The second Caroline Monet, expected to replace her at the pinnacle within a year...]
[Quentin Shaw's newest partner...]
