"Sorry, I'm late."
A gentle yet crisp voice rang out as a tall woman in a cream-colored coat walked gracefully into the room.
Her assistant trailing behind her was carrying several large bags. "These are treats Ms. Sylvain bought for everyone."
Upon seeing her, the room immediately erupted as people stood up.
"Wow, Isabella, I can't believe you came to our party too!"
"This dessert shop is so expensive, I usually can't even afford it!"
"Thank you, Isabella! We're in for a treat tonight!"
Amidst the chorus of cheers and flattery, Isabella merely gave an elegant nod, a polite yet distant smile gracing her lips, before walking straight toward Quentin at the table.
"Quentin, what made you decide to come to the party tonight?"
Quentin gave a slight nod in greeting. "I was free tonight."
It was just a subtle gesture, but the others around them immediately exchanged excited glances.
It wasn't hard to guess what they were getting so worked up about.
Chloe couldn't help but look up at the woman standing next to Quentin.
The woman had a radiant complexion, her dark hair pinned up elegantly. Her oval face exuded a cool, aristocratic vibe. She was tall, and though she dressed simply, she possessed a refined grace that seemed ingrained in her very bones.
So this was Isabella?
Isabella also looked at Chloe.
A fleeting hint of impatience and reproach flashed in her beautiful eyes, so faint and quick that it was gone in an instant.
The next second, a hand gently tugged at Chloe.
Someone pointed to an empty seat and said, "Ms. Reed, why don't you come sit over here and free up that spot?"
Chloe instantly realized what was happening.
Quentin was sitting on the far inside, and the only seat next to him was the one she was occupying.
"Oh, sure."
Chloe was just about to stand up when a warm, large hand suddenly wrapped gently around her arm.
"Just sit here."
Quentin looked at Isabella. "Ms. Reed prefers the quiet. It's too noisy over there."
"My last name is Reed," Chloe said.
"Ms. Reed?" Isabella gave a soft smile. "This morning, Monica came to me and asked me to take your place for an event. My schedule was already packed, but since it was an assignment from the institute, I couldn't really refuse. I had to squeeze it in."
The moment she said this, the previously relaxed atmosphere instantly froze.
Noticing this, Isabella seemed to suddenly realize something. A look of surprise flickered in her beautiful eyes, swiftly turning into apology.
"Ms. Reed, were you originally planning to take that event? I'm so sorry, I had no idea."
The others exchanged glances, making the mood even more awkward.
After the drama from the day before, practically everyone in the institute had changed their opinion of Chloe.
This was a place where skill did the talking, after all.
And the malicious rumors Andrea had spread naturally fell apart.
Just when everyone assumed Chloe would secure a promotion from assistant to interpreter with this event, her spot had been snatched away...
Lydia couldn't hold back. "Isabella, the Secretary General specifically requested Ms. Reed yesterday."
These words, laced with suppressed emotion, made Isabella pause slightly before she looked deeply regretful.
