Chloe watched Preston's retreating figure until he disappeared, then looked away and walked out of the station herself.
On her way home, she received a call from Quentin Shaw.
“I heard Jenna followed Dr. Sharpe to the Sterling Interpretation Institute today. She didn't cause you any trouble, did she?”
“No,” Chloe replied smoothly. “I actually beat her to a pulp.”
A low, amused chuckle echoed through the phone line.
“I'll be back soon.”
“Mhm. Focus on your work, don't worry about me.”
After hanging up, it belatedly dawned on her how strange that was.
Quentin's call had come at an incredibly coincidental time.
Deciding not to dwell on it, Chloe headed straight home.
After taking a shower, she fired up her laptop and pulled up the dossier Monica Sterling had sent her regarding John, reading through it meticulously.
She thought the day's drama was finally over, but in the middle of the night, she received a sudden call from Monica.
“Chloe, I need you to come to the hospital right now.”
Chloe frowned. “What happened?”
Monica's voice sounded incredibly defeated. “Just get over here.”
Feeling an uneasy sense of dread, Chloe grabbed a cab and headed to the address Monica provided.
Monica was waiting for her at the hospital entrance.
“Chloe, what exactly is your relationship with Mr. Hayes?”
Chloe immediately realized what was going on.
“He came looking for you?”
Monica sighed. “Vantage Group's potential is undeniable. They are highly likely to spearhead the future of the tech industry. Even the government is eager to collaborate with their research.”
“So, as a word of advice, you really shouldn't cross Preston Hayes.”
“Did he threaten you?” Chloe asked sharply.
Monica merely sighed, offering no reply.
That was all the confirmation Chloe needed. She brushed past Monica and marched straight into the building.
Preston was standing outside the VIP ward. His eyes filled with complex emotions the moment he saw her.
“Chloe, you're here.”
Chloe stared right through him. “Tell me what you want, straight to the point.”
Preston's handsome features were shadowed by the dim hallway lights. He looked deeply conflicted.
