The door to the tea room clicked shut.
The moment Lucian was out of sight, the obsequious smile vanished from Asher's face.
He turned his attention to Chloe, his eyes raking over her with a calculated, assessing gleam.
“You British?”
Chloe ignored his intrusive stare. “American.”
“Is that so?” Asher arched an eyebrow. “Ah, a fellow American. Let's drop the formalities then and get straight to business to save us both the headache.”
Chloe took a seat. “Mr. Vane, I came here to—”
Asher cut her off immediately. “What's your relationship with Mr. Sylvain?”
Chloe paused for a second. “We're friends.”
Asher let out an ambiguous, knowing chuckle before leaning back in his chair. “Alright, spit it out. What do you want?”
Since she had already used Lucian's influence to get this far, Chloe decided to get straight to the point.
“I want to arrange a meeting with John.”
Asher choked on his drink, clearly not expecting the beautiful woman sitting across from him to make such an insane demand.
“Excuse me?”
He coughed violently before sneering. “Women these days really are something else! You've got some nerve demanding that with a straight face!”
“Let me give you a reality check. Even if Mr. Sylvain himself asked for a sit-down, John would refuse! What makes you think you're so special?”
Chloe replied calmly, “I'm looking for him because I want to help him.”
Asher found this even more hilarious. “Help him? Do tell, sweetheart. How exactly do you plan on helping a man like him?”
Chloe looked him dead in the eye. “Just get John on the phone. Tell him I know exactly where the item he's been searching for is.”
She purposely kept it vague.
Ever since realizing Asher was also an American, her guard had gone up.
After all, tonight had taught her that a nobody like Jenna could never secure a meeting with a ghost like John unless someone powerful was pulling strings behind the scenes.
And she certainly couldn't successfully embezzle that kind of money and vanish without an inside connection.
It was highly likely that the man sitting in front of her was one of Jenna's accomplices.
