Once the car came to a complete halt, she sat up and shoved Preston away.
Preston winced in pain. "You heartless little thing."
Truthfully, Chloe despised the word "heartless."
No matter the tone, it never failed to trigger her disgust.
Growing up, it was the word she feared most—and heard the most—when Linda Rivers would guilt-trip her.
Linda would always go on about how hard her father worked, and how Chloe was so incredibly heartless for not obeying her mother.
Back then, Chloe had been too young to understand, and her heart would fill with overwhelming guilt toward her father.
She knew how exhausting his work was.
Every time he came home, there would be fresh bruises layering over old wounds.
But her father would just smile, insisting it didn't hurt, and whisper for her to keep it a secret from her mother.
That only made Chloe's heart ache more.
Sometimes, she genuinely wondered if she truly was heartless.
Preston didn't notice the subtle shift in Chloe's expression. He looked toward Ken.
"What happened?"
"A car... cut us off," Ken replied, still reeling from the shock.
Frowning, Preston shoved the door open and stepped out.
Chloe forcefully pushed her door open as well.
The moment her feet hit the pavement, a figure rushed toward her.
"Are you hurt?"
Recognizing the man, Chloe stared in shock. "Quentin? Why are you..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Quentin grabbed her arm and pulled her forward.
There was no way Preston was going to let Chloe be taken away. He stepped up immediately, aggressively shoving Quentin back.
"Do you have any idea what you're doing? Chloe was in the car! Do you not care about her safety at all?"
Quentin didn't say a word.
Several bodyguards stepped forward, completely blocking Preston's path.
