Preston smiled faintly.
He assumed Jenna visited so often the nurse mistook her for his wife.
"She is a wonderful woman, but she isn't my wife."
"Oh?" Nurse Brenda froze.
Preston didn't even realize what he was doing before the words left his mouth.
"My wife is Chloe Reed."
"She's stunning. Even though she has a bit of a temper and gets mad easily, she loves me deeply."
Nurse Brenda gave an awkward smile. "Oh..."
She felt it was odd but kept it to herself.
She figured she'd just ask the girl for her real name the next time she saw her.
...
The next morning, Belle Evans sent Chloe a location pin on WhatsApp.
Chloe looked at the coordinates, her lips curling into a cold smirk.
Then, she arrived right on time at the desolate woods on the outskirts of the city.
A white-haired man was leaning lazily against a tree stump. His pale skin seemed to glow in the morning light, radiating an eerie, captivating charm.
Hearing her approach, he looked up with a smile.
"Right on time."
Chloe sneered inwardly but played along, feigning concern.
"Where is Belle?"
Julian Sterling stood up straight. "You didn't break our agreement, did you?"
"I wouldn't want anyone interrupting our little reunion."
Chloe snapped, "Cut the crap and take me to Belle!"
Julian stared at her for a moment before saying,
"Don't worry. I'll help you look."
"I found her phone right here in these woods. She might just be lost."
"Really? Then let's go find her right now," Chloe said, walking briskly ahead.
Julian let out an unreadable chuckle and followed her.
As they walked, he asked casually,
"Chloe, why are you going to The Republic of Veritas?"
"None of your business," Chloe replied.
