Jenna let out a cold scoff, her voice dripping with disdain. "That's assuming they can even locate John, that spineless coward hiding in his shell."
"Relax, they don't have what it takes! I'm not worried at all!"
...
Preston pursued her relentlessly.
Quentin turned to Chloe. "Get in the car first. I'll handle him."
Chloe grabbed his arm. "Never mind, I'll deal with him."
"Call me if you need me," Quentin said.
Standing a short distance away, Preston watched the exchange, so infuriated he wanted to laugh, but he couldn't even manage that.
Chloe walked up to him, her voice icy. "What is it?"
"Since when did you two get so close?" Preston demanded.
He took a long stride toward her. "I've noticed you've been spending an awful lot of time with him."
Chloe just stared at him.
Preston feigned nonchalance. "Oh, I didn't mean anything by it. I know you're just working. But you're my wife. How could you stoop to being someone else's assistant..."
Pushed past her breaking point, Chloe snapped, "Did you seek me out just to critique my career?"
"No..."
Anticipating her next move, Preston sidestepped and blocked her path before she could walk away.
Chloe glared at him, but he merely flashed a cocky smile.
"I came to find you to explain what happened this afternoon."
"It has nothing to do with me," Chloe replied. "I don't want to hear it."
Preston suddenly grabbed her hand, ignoring her completely.
"This afternoon, the hospital called to say my mother is showing signs of waking up. When Jenna called me, she was just relaying the message."
Chloe yanked her hand free. "Right. Congratulations."
Preston grabbed her hand again, pressing it into his own.
"The doctors said this is a critical period and that we need to talk to her a lot. That's why I spent the entire afternoon in her room..."
Chloe took a step back. "Do you have anything else to say? Why are you telling me this?"
