Rhonda wept tears of joy.
Over the past few weeks, she had watched her father grow too weak to eat or drink. Seeing him down a glass of water felt like an absolute miracle.
"Dad, are you hungry? I can go make you something good."
Mr. Goodwin nodded slightly. "I'd love a bowl of clear broth noodles."
He looked over at Chloe and Belle. "Are you girls hungry?"
Chloe shook her head and gently took his hand.
Rhonda happily rushed off to the kitchen.
Mr. Goodwin gazed at Chloe, his cloudy eyes focusing on her as he squeezed her hand back.
"Chloe, how have you been?"
"I'm living and working overseas now," Chloe answered softly. "I just flew back yesterday."
He nodded slowly, a look of profound relief washing over his face. "That's good. That's very good..."
He shifted his gaze to Belle.
"Mr. Goodwin, I'm doing great too," Belle chimed in quickly. "You don't need to worry about us."
Mr. Goodwin offered a weak smile. "Knowing you're both doing well puts my heart at ease."
Then, as if suddenly remembering something, he asked, "Are you able to get in touch with Preston?"
The mention of his name brought a brief, loaded silence over the room.
"I have something I need to say to him," Mr. Goodwin continued.
"Actually, I wanted to talk to him right after my birthday dinner. But I never expected my health to crash this fast. I was bedridden just a few days later."
"So I kept putting it off, and I never got the chance."
Chloe stood up immediately. "I'll call him."
She pulled out her phone and dialed a familiar number.
It rang for a long time, but no one picked up.
"It's alright," Mr. Goodwin said softly. "It's late. He's probably already asleep. It's fine."
Belle tried to comfort him. "Don't worry, Mr. Goodwin. Once you're fully recovered, you can see whoever you want, and tell them whatever you need to say..."
Mr. Goodwin just smiled faintly, remaining silent.
Chloe watched him, every nerve in her body pulled taut.
A crushing wave of despair flooded her chest.
She knew what this was. This wasn't a miraculous recovery. It was terminal lucidity. The final rally before the end.
Chloe redialed the number.
This time, someone answered.
But it was a sharp, impatient woman's voice.
