Mr. Goodwin's funeral was a modest affair.
He hadn't wanted to invite anyone.
But many of his former students heard the news and flew in from all over the country, gathering around to pay their respects with teary eyes.
When Preston arrived, Chloe was standing at the edge of the grave, tossing pieces of funereal scrip into the small fire, one by one.
Seeing her frail silhouette standing there made his chest tighten painfully, as if a hand were crushing his heart.
He walked up silently, crouched down, and picked up a stack of spirit money.
Hearing the movement, Chloe glanced at him.
Her expression didn't flicker. She simply looked away.
Preston's hand stalled in mid-air.
"Chloe, I..."
Chloe stood up, gave three deep bows to the headstone, and walked away without so much as a second glance.
Preston started to go after her.
But several of his old classmates recognized him and swarmed him, offering condolences. By the time he finally managed to politely extricate himself, Chloe was gone.
He hurried forward, scanning the crowd.
He bumped straight into Belle and immediately asked, "Where is Chloe?"
Belle glared at him. "None of your damn business. Shouldn't you be busy sleeping with Jenna?"
Preston frowned deeply. "Is this the kind of nonsense you feed her all day? Jenna and I..."
"Jenna this, Jenna that! Every other word out of your mouth is Jenna!" Belle rolled her eyes. "You're a cheating bastard who doesn't even have the guts to admit it!"
She spun around and stormed off.
Preston's face darkened.
But thankfully, he managed to spot Chloe in the distance. She was standing quietly, talking to Rhonda.
The knot in his chest loosened.
At least she was still here.
He was just about to walk over when a commotion broke out near the headstone.
