Before she could pull her hand back, Stefan’s eyelashes fluttered, and his eyes suddenly opened, fixing on her as if he hadn't been drunk at all.
Winona froze for a second before her senses returned, her voice tight with nerves. "Mr. Goddard, you're not drunk?"
His gaze softened, and then he slowly closed his eyes again. "No, I'm not drunk."
He said he wasn't drunk, but his body leaned against hers, his head resting on her shoulder.
Winona didn't dare move, her heart pounding in her chest. How could he not be drunk? He was clearly wasted. Otherwise, why would he be leaning on her like this?
Though she didn't know him well, she could tell that beneath his gentlemanly and polite exterior, he was a fundamentally cold person, distant to everyone except Violet.
The driver returned with the phone and paused for a moment when he saw Stefan resting on Winona's shoulder. He quickly composed himself. "Thank you for your help, Ms. Jowett. I'll take you home first."
"That's not necessary," Winona said. "Mr. Goddard is drunk. You should take him home. I can get a ride myself."
As she spoke, she tried to help Stefan sit up straight, but he reached out and pressed her back against the seat.
Before she could react, she felt his warm breath on her neck. It was a ticklish, tingling sensation that sent a blush creeping up her cheeks.
The driver smiled. "I'm sure Mr. Goddard would want me to take you home as well."
With that, he started the car.
Winona sat perfectly still, acutely aware of the aura emanating from Stefan. Her heart was about to pound out of her chest. She had never felt such an intense flutter, not even when she was dating Yulen.
Still, she didn't think it was because she had feelings for Stefan. It was probably just because a powerful man like him was suddenly so close to her that she felt this nervous.
Suddenly, Stefan's phone began to ring.
As Winona debated whether to answer it for him, the driver said, "Ms. Jowett, could you see if that's the old madam calling? If it is, please let her know we'll be there soon."
The driver smiled. "Thank you for taking care of Mr. Goddard."
Winona glanced at Stefan, who still had his eyes closed, and then got out of the car.
The car started moving again, and the driver raised the partition to the back seat. Stefan's eyes snapped open, his usual distant expression was back.
The driver spoke softly, "Mr. Goddard, that car that was following us was taking pictures of you."
"Mm," Stefan grunted.
The driver hesitated for a moment before asking, "Is it really a good idea to involve Ms. Jowett in this?"
Stefan replied coolly, "My grandmother likes her. It makes my interactions with her more believable. Since I'm using her, I will compensate her properly."
He gazed at the neon lights outside, his face cold as ice. "I know exactly what the Powell family is scheming."
