Winona spent two days at her apartment, and Yulen didn't call to ask her to come back. It seemed his attention was entirely on Tallulah, which brought Winona a small sense of relief.
On Saturday afternoon, the doorbell rang. Thinking it was Rhea, she went to open it, only to find Yulen standing outside.
Seeing her less-than-welcoming expression, Yulen said irritably, "Winona, I told you I would come to pick you up. Pack your things and come home with me."
Winona frowned. "I'm fine living here. It's convenient for taking care of my grandmother and Greta. Besides, you enjoy bringing Tallulah home, don't you? I've given her the master bedroom. I'm sure she's thrilled, right?"
Yulen scoffed in disbelief. "You're still holding a grudge, aren't you? It's been so long, and you're still hung up on it? I told you, she's just an immature young woman. What's the big deal about cutting her some slack?"
Winona felt there was no point in continuing the conversation. "I have things to do today," she said flatly. "I'm not going back."
Yulen's face hardened. "If you don't go back, I'll stay here with you."
Before Winona could refuse, he continued, "You wouldn't want Nikita to find out we're living apart over a small disagreement, would you?"
Winona couldn't help but clench her fists.
Nikita's health had always been poor, and with Helena's recent divorce, it had taken a turn for the worse. She couldn't risk upsetting the old woman now. At that moment, she found Yulen disgusting.
Not wanting to push her too far, Yulen softened his tone. "I know you still have some misunderstandings about me, but after all our years together, you don't trust me? Those rumors about me and Tallulah aren't true."
He tried to step forward and hug her, but Winona sidestepped him.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Helena.
"Winona, Nikita just collapsed! You need to get to the hospital, quickly!"
Winona gripped Nikita's hand, a sharp pain twisting in her chest as tears streamed down her face. She hated how powerless she was. She worked in pharmaceutical research, yet she couldn't develop a drug to cure Nikita's illness in time.
Yulen wiped her tears away, his heart aching for her. "Winona, don't cry. Nikita wouldn't want to see you like this."
That evening, Yulen went out to buy dinner, leaving just Winona and Helena in the room.
Looking at Winona's red-rimmed eyes, Helena whispered, "Winona, about you and Yulen... can you please not tell Nikita for now? My divorce is already a source of regret for her. I don't want her to have another one before she passes."
Thinking about how Nikita only had three months left, Winona agreed without hesitation. "I know. I’ll pretend everything is fine between Yulen and me in front of her. For her, I'll do anything."
She pressed her cheek against Nikita's frail, thin hand. The old woman had poured her heart and soul into raising her. How could she bear to let her leave this world with yet another regret?
