The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 129

Ophelia flinched, the gentle and dignified expression on her face nearly cracking. But she quickly composed herself. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Stefan. I didn’t frame her.”

Stefan just smiled, but his voice was cold. “Ophelia, I’m not an idiot. I can guess what you’re thinking, so there’s no need to pretend.”

Ophelia’s palms were slick with sweat, but she gathered the courage to ask, “Stefan, do you like her?”

She expected him to say no. Instead, he gave a quiet, “I do.”

Ophelia’s expression froze. She stared at him, dumbfounded. “Why?”

“There is no why,” Stefan said. “Ophelia, I’ve always known about the games you used to play with Maeve. From now on, I want you to stay far away from Winona.”

With that, he turned and walked out of the bedroom.

Left alone, Ophelia clutched the bedsheets, her mouth twisting into a vicious smile. Who did Winona think she was? What right did she have to compete with her? Stefan could only belong to her!

Seeing Stefan emerge, Wynne smiled. “Don’t tell me you came all this way just to see Ophelia and me.”

Stefan’s voice softened. “I’m here because of a partnership with the Locke family. However, my grandmother also asked me to invite you to our place for dinner.”

“I’ll come in a couple of days,” Wynne replied.

Stefan nodded, but as he was about to leave, he turned back. “Mrs. Powell, I found something while I was investigating in Riverton. But,” he paused, “please don’t get your hopes up just yet.”

Wynne looked at him, confused.

“I found the nurse from the clinic where you gave birth,” Stefan said.

Wynne’s eyes suddenly stung with tears. “Stefan, take me to her! Now!”

“Stefan, isn’t there any way to make her lucid again?” Wynne asked desperately.

“She also had twins,” Stefan explained quietly. “When they were two, they were playing outside and drowned in a pond because her in-laws weren't watching them closely. When she delivered your babies, seeing twins might have triggered the memory of her own. We heard she lived with the twins in a village for a while, but then the children disappeared, and she lost her mind. By the time we found her, she’d been in this nursing home for years. We haven't been able to get anything out of her.”

A sharp pain seized Wynne’s heart, and she swayed, struggling to stay upright.

“I’ll have my people look into other avenues,” Stefan said gently. “Let me take you home first.”

In the car, Wynne still felt a heavy weight on her chest. As they passed a park, she remembered the many times she had walked there while pregnant.

“Stefan, I’d like to take a walk in that park,” she said. “If you have things to do, you can go ahead.”

“Alright,” Stefan nodded. He instructed the driver to stop and had a bodyguard accompany Wynne before he departed.
