Winona instinctively clutched her chest, not wanting him to touch her. Her self-preservation instincts were strong.
“Winona, are you all right?” he asked softly, withdrawing his hand.
Lying on the bed, Winona’s red lips parted, her voice low and sensual. “Don’t touch me. Don’t.”
Stefan looked down at her, his eyes fixed. He had never seen her like this. She was wearing a pink silk blouse and a grey mermaid skirt, and the way she lay on the bed accentuated every curve of her body—a portrait of both elegance and seduction.
Though he'd been celibate for years, a wave of desire washed over him, and his throat tightened.
Perhaps the scent of his cologne was familiar and made her feel safe. A glimmer of clarity returned to Winona, and she murmured, “I want some water.”
Unable to resist, Stefan gently stroked her delicate cheek, his voice a little hoarse. “Just a moment.”
When he returned with the water, Winona had already fallen asleep. Her slender, pale neck gave off an alluring scent.
Stefan suppressed the strange heat building inside him, his hand gently gripping her slim waist as he helped her drink. She was very thirsty, subconsciously sipping from the cup he held to her lips.
Stefan’s eyes were locked on her face, unblinking. Suddenly, she choked and began to cough, her face turning crimson. Her hand reflexively gripped his shirt as she curled into his arms.
It seemed the drug had been laced with something else. Her face grew hotter, and her hand started fumbling for his belt.
Stefan looked down at her, took a deep breath to quell the rising tide of his own desire, and tried to push her away.
But she suddenly looked up and kissed the pulse point on his neck. He froze. The thread of his self-control snapped. He couldn’t help but lower his head and kiss her back, their mouths filled with the taste of passion.
He carefully fed her the medicine. Just as he was about to leave after she swallowed it, Winona suddenly grabbed his arm. He tried to pull away, but her eyes reddened, and tears of distress streamed down her face.
Resigned, he lay down on the bed next to her, placing a pillow between them. She hugged his arm and murmured contentedly in her sleep.
Stefan tried several times to retrieve his arm, but failed. In the end, he let her be. He had never been so tormented by a woman. He decided to just chalk it up as his good deed for the day.
He had wanted to rest, but with her sleeping beside him, squirming and snuggling closer, how could he possibly sleep?
After tossing and turning for what felt like an eternity, he finally tossed the pillow aside, reached out, and pulled her into his arms.
Finding a comfortable source of warmth, Winona sighed in satisfaction and fell into a deep sleep.
