But Victor still didn't reply. Winona couldn’t understand why he was ignoring her. Did he have some sort of problem with her?
She checked Victor's Twitter feed. The most recent post was from the previous night: a photo of him and Ophelia at a fencing club in Riverton. Scrolling further, she saw that photos from the fencing club appeared frequently.
Since Victor clearly loved fencing, perhaps she could use that to get his attention.
Winona had been in a fencing club in college, so she had some basic skills, but it had been a long time, and she was rusty. Moreover, Victor seemed to be a regular at the club, which probably made him a semi-professional. If she wanted to connect with him through fencing, she would need to hire a coach and practice.
She found a highly-rated fencing club online and headed there directly after work the next day. The owner listened to her needs and recommended a coach. When Winona asked for a trial lesson, he readily agreed.
After paying the fee, Winona began her lesson. The coach, a young man named Charlton, seemed more interested in her looks than her footwork, and he kept finding excuses to touch her waist during the exercises.
Feeling disgusted, Winona stomped hard on his foot and went to the owner to demand a different coach.
“We’re a bit short-staffed,” the owner said apologetically. “All our other coaches are booked at this time. Could you maybe wait a bit?”
“In that case, I’ll just practice on my own,” Winona said.
She had the basics down; what she really needed was a sparring partner. She scanned the floor and her eyes landed on a fencer with exceptional technique.
When he finished his bout and stepped off the strip to rest, Winona approached him. He hadn't removed his mask, so she asked, “Excuse me, are you a coach here?”
He didn’t answer. Winona felt as though he were sizing her up from behind the mesh of his mask. She asked again.
This time, he shook his head.
“I’d like to hire you as a sparring partner,” she said earnestly. “I’m willing to pay. You can name your price.”
He seemed to hesitate.
