Just as she was enjoying a moment of peace, Roxana walked toward her.
Winona could tell the girl disliked her, so she kept to herself, standing quietly to the side.
“So you’re the slut who flirts with my brother even though you already have a man?” Roxana’s voice was sharp and accusatory.
Winona frowned. This princess might have an innocent face, but her words were ugly. For the sake of Stefan, who had helped her several times, Winona decided not to argue and turned to leave.
Her silence only seemed to infuriate Roxana further. Having been coddled her entire life, she was not used to being ignored.
She stepped forward and grabbed Winona’s arm. “Are you running away because you have a guilty conscience?”
Winona sighed in frustration. “I barely know your brother.”
“Liar!” Roxana retorted. “You suck up to my grandmother and constantly hang around my brother because you’re a social climber. You already have a man, but you’re still greedy for more. You’re shameless!”
Winona had no desire to cause a scene that would attract an audience. The princess would likely get away with it, while she would be the one subjected to gossip and judgment. She pulled her arm free and tried to walk away.
But Roxana was stubborn and followed close behind. “Where do you think you’re going? Stop!”
Roxana, whose poor health meant she rarely attended social events, was unaccustomed to high heels. As she hurried after Winona, her ankle twisted, and she lost her balance.
They were right next to the swimming pool.
Roxana’s body tipped sideways and plunged into the water.
She couldn’t swim. Thrashing in the water, she screamed for help.
