Winona smiled. “Okay, then. Come on in.”
Stefan brought the toys to Biscuit. At first, the little dog was hesitant to approach them. But when he saw Stefan sitting on the sofa, seemingly with no intention of bothering him, he grew bolder. He grabbed a ball with his front paws, bit down on it, and carried it to his little bed, where he began batting it around.
Winona was still limping slightly. She pointed toward the water dispenser. “Help yourself to some water.”
Stefan nodded. He went to pour a glass and brought one back for her as well. Winona took a sip, her expression a little awkward. “Thank you for yesterday.”
“You’re welcome,” Stefan replied with a simple nod.
Winona was relieved that he didn’t ask about what had happened.
“Have you changed the dressing on your wound?” he asked.
“I was about to,” Winona replied.
“I’ll help you. Where’s the first-aid kit?”
Seeing his insistence, Winona pointed to a cabinet. “Second shelf.”
Stefan retrieved the kit and knelt in front of her. He placed her injured foot on his thigh and carefully began to unwrap the gauze. Her foot was pale and soft, feeling like a fragile work of art in his hand.
A warmth crept up Winona’s cheeks. The foot no longer hurt, but it began to feel… itchy.
Before dabbing her wound with an alcohol swab, he said softly, “This might sting a little. Just bear with it.”
“Okay.”
The alcohol did sting as it touched the broken skin. Winona instinctively reached out and gripped his shirt.
Stefan glanced up and saw her eyes were red-rimmed. He lowered his head and gently blew on the wound. Her body instantly went rigid, a shiver running through her as if from an electric shock. A playful smile touched his lips, and he blew on it again. He noticed her grip on his shirt tighten, and his eyes darkened for a moment.
He paused before continuing to apply the ointment. Winona bit her lip, her entire body flushing with embarrassment.
