He had never dated Ophelia, let alone cheated on her. What was there to regret? As several other executives approached to network, Sylvan dropped the personal topic and engaged them in conversation. Stefan took the opportunity to walk over to where Nolan was sitting.
After finishing his chat, Sylvan noticed Stefan was gone and turned to Ophelia. “Stefan doesn’t seem to have any other women in his life, and you’re the only one he allows close to him. If that isn’t love, what is? I suspect he just doesn’t realize the depth of his feelings. Don’t be too available for him. Give him the cold shoulder now and then, and maybe it will help him figure out his own heart.”
“I understand, Mr. Scully,” Ophelia replied.
Sylvan still had more to say to Stefan, so he and Ophelia went to find him. They found him with Winona, Julian, and Nolan, who were deep in a discussion about a research and development problem. Their conversation had attracted a small crowd of other R&D experts who were listening in.
Sylvan approached and stood at the edge of the group, listening quietly. As a medical doctor with a background in pharmaceutical development, he found their discussion fascinating. He was particularly impressed with the insights coming from Winona and Julian. *It’s a blessing for the country to have such brilliant young minds,* he thought.
He was well-acquainted with the Hartley family and naturally knew Julian. Seeing him standing so comfortably next to Winona, he asked Ophelia, “Is that young woman Julian’s girlfriend? They look good together.”
Ophelia felt a prick of jealousy at the admiration in his voice. She forced a smile. “That’s Winona. She’s not Julian’s girlfriend. I heard she’s seeing someone—the CEO of some company—but they’re keeping the relationship private.”
