Winona’s heart clenched, and she rushed to the hospital. Helena and Yulen were already there, waiting anxiously outside the operating room. “How is she?” Winona asked, her face pale.
“We don’t know yet,” Helena said, her eyes filled with worry. “We have to wait until after the surgery.”
Nikita was in the final stages of liver failure, and even the doctors couldn’t say how much time she had left. Winona stared at the closed doors of the operating room, her own eyes turning red. She was terrified she would never see Nikita again. Yulen saw her distress and took her hand. “Don’t be scared, Winona. Nikita will be okay. I’m here, and I’ll stay with you.”
At that moment, Winona had no energy to think about their broken relationship. All she wanted was for Nikita to be safe. Two hours later, Nikita was wheeled out. Winona rushed forward, her hands trembling as she looked at her grandmother’s still, pale face.
“How is she, doctor?” Yulen asked.
“The patient’s liver has been failing for a long time,” the doctor explained gravely. “If she doesn’t regain consciousness within 24 to 72 hours, or if cerebral edema worsens, the family should be prepared for the possibility of a long-term coma, or worse.”
Tears streamed down Winona’s face. She clutched Nikita’s hand, her heart twisting in agony.
For two days and two nights, Winona didn't leave Nikita's side. On the third day, Nikita finally woke up. Seeing Winona and Yulen there, a loving smile touched her lips. Winona squeezed her hand, tears of relief falling. “Grandma, you scared me to death.”
