Winona offered a faint, knowing smile, silently agreeing with her words.
Tallulah had also arrived at the auction.
Dressed in an extravagant designer gown, she oozed the arrogant entitlement of a spoiled heiress.
Spotting Winona in the crowd, Tallulah's lips curled into a disdainful sneer.
She couldn't believe someone with Winona's ordinary background would dare show her face at an event like this. Didn't she realize that a single item on the auction block could bankrupt her entire bloodline?
Tallulah strutted over to her assigned seat, which happened to be right next to Sylvan.
Sylvan offered a warm, polite smile. "Ms. Shipley, a pleasure to see you here."
Tallulah immediately switched to a sweet, innocent tone. "Yes, I'm here to find a special gift for my mother."
Sylvan always had a soft spot for talented, filial younger generations. Hearing this, he offered her a few words of genuine praise.
Looking at her, his mind drifted to his missing twins. One of them had been a girl. If she had grown up, she would probably be just as smart, sweet, and thoughtful as this young woman beside him.
It broke his heart that he hadn't been there to watch her grow.
He could only pray that he would find his children soon.
The auction commenced.
Winona casually flipped through the glossy catalog in her hands, the picture of perfect composure.
Tallulah had already successfully bid on two pieces of jewelry worth around $300,000 each. Seeing that Winona hadn't raised her paddle once, she let out a mocking laugh.
She knew it. Winona didn't have the money to afford a single thing in this room.
Finally, the item Winona had been waiting for appeared: the antique jade pendant.
As soon as the auctioneer finished the introduction, she didn't hesitate to raise her paddle.
"Three hundred thousand."
She had already calculated her savings. As long as the bidding didn't go over a million dollars, she could comfortably take it home.
Rhea looked at her, puzzled. "What's so special about that piece of jade?"
Winona kept her eyes on the stage. "It belonged to a nineteenth-century countess. She fell gravely ill, and the doctors said she wouldn't live past a year. Later, a traveling healer gifted her this pendant. After wearing it for a year, she miraculously recovered and lived to be a hundred. I'm hoping this jade can protect my grandmother the same way."
Rhea softened. She knew how deeply Winona loved Nikita, and how desperate she was to try anything to keep the older woman healthy.
Thinking about how Yulen had actually hurt Nikita before, Rhea felt a surge of rage, wishing she could tear the man to pieces.
Across the room, Tallulah's brow furrowed when she saw Winona raise her paddle.
It was just an ordinary piece of jade. She was actually willing to spend $300,000 on it?
