The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 218

Wynne offered a bitter, heartbreaking smile. "I remember giving birth to them at a hospital in Greenwood County. I managed to find out that the person who stole them was a nurse. She suffered from severe mental illness and took the babies to live in Creek Village for a while. Eventually, she was committed to a psychiatric facility, but the children... they just vanished."

Winona's eyes widened in shock.

Creek Village? Wasn't that where she had grown up?

She turned to Wynne, her pulse racing. "Wynne, I grew up in Creek Village. My grandmother would definitely remember something from over twenty years ago. I'll ask her if anyone in the village ever took in a pair of twins."

Wynne didn't want to get her hopes up.

After all, Stefan had exhausted every resource looking into it and had come up entirely empty-handed.

Still, she smiled softly and nodded. "Thank you. I'd really appreciate that."

Winona took the jade pendant to a renowned spiritual center to have it blessed. The holistic healer in residence told her the cleansing ritual would take a week before she could pick it up.

She agreed, thanked the healer, and headed home.

The moment she unlocked her apartment door, Biscuit came trotting out, his tail wagging furiously in greeting.

Winona crouched down to scoop him up, but Biscuit suddenly darted past her and bolted out into the hallway.

She turned around and froze. Stefan was standing there.

He was back from his business trip. Dressed in a sharply tailored black overcoat, his tall, athletic frame exuded a cold, elegant authority.

He scooped Biscuit up into his arms, raising an eyebrow. "Smell the dog treats in my bag, did you? Is that why you're suddenly so affectionate?"

Winona couldn't help but smile. She stood up. "Have you eaten yet? Do you want to grab dinner together?"

Stefan nodded. "Sounds good."

He dropped his luggage off at his own place before carrying Biscuit over to Winona's apartment.

Winona was at the sink washing vegetables. When he walked into the kitchen, she handed him a yogurt smoothie she had just bought from the grocery store.

"Drink this first."

He took the smoothie, set it on the counter, and casually rolled up his sleeves. His forearms were lean and corded with muscle as he stepped up to help her prep the food.

Stefan's sheer physical proximity made a sudden rush of heat pool in her cheeks.

Suddenly, the water from the faucet sputtered and died.

Winona frowned, turned the tap off, and twisted it back on. Nothing.

She dried her hands, pulled out her phone, and called the building manager.
