When they arrived at the Goddard Manor, Violet’s face lit up the moment she saw Winona. "Winona, my dear, it feels like forever since you last visited! I heard your grandmother’s surgery was a success. Between working and caring for her, you must be exhausted. How about I send over a few professional caregivers to help you out?"
Winona offered a grateful smile. "Thank you so much, Violet, but I’ve already got her care sorted out."
Violet nodded, but the thought of her daughter-in-law’s recent foolishness brought a frown to her face. "Please don't let the recent news get to you. Stefan’s mother has lost her mind, trying to force a marriage between Stefan and Ophelia. Let alone Stefan, I would never allow such a ridiculous thing to happen."
"I understand, Violet," Winona replied softly.
Even though she knew both Stefan and his grandmother firmly rejected Ophelia, Margaret’s fierce favoritism toward the woman meant things could still get complicated. It was one of the main reasons Winona was so hesitant to fully accept Stefan’s feelings.
During dinner, Violet constantly urged Winona to eat more, even directing Stefan to shell the shrimp for her.
Stefan complied without a word of complaint. Whatever his grandmother asked, he did seamlessly.
Violet felt incredibly smug. When had her notoriously aloof grandson ever been this obedient and attentive? It was obvious—he was truly falling for Winona. She’d always known her eye for a granddaughter-in-law was impeccable. It was only natural that Stefan would be smitten.
After wiping his hands on a napkin, Stefan turned to Winona. "Would you like some more soup?"
Winona shook her head. "No, thank you."
The exhaustion from staying up late the previous night was catching up to her, making her head spin slightly.
Noticing her pale complexion, Stefan frowned. "You're exhausted."
Winona offered a faint "Mhm."
"I'm taking you to rest," he declared.
Before Winona could process his words, he stood up, leaned down, and scooped her into his arms. Her cheek landed squarely against his firm chest. Heat flushed her face and ears, and her voice pitched into an involuntary, flustered whisper. "Put me down. I can walk perfectly fine on my own."
