Next, she dialed his assistant.
"Ms. Jowett, Mr. Goddard injured his hand. He's at the hospital right now."
Winona’s heart leaped into her throat. "How did it happen? Is it serious?"
"..." The assistant hesitated but ultimately confessed, "Ms. Mallory showed up today. She had a knife and threatened to kill herself if Mr. Goddard didn't get back together with her. When he wrestled the blade away from her, it sliced his palm open."
Winona felt a cold sweat break out. "Give me the hospital's address."
When she rushed into the private hospital room, she found Stefan sitting up in bed, his left hand heavily bandaged, an IV dripping antibiotics into his arm.
"Mr. Goddard, are you alright?"
He looked up, a soft smile breaking across his face when he saw her. "I'm fine."
Sensing they needed a moment, the assistant tactfully slipped out of the room, clicking the door shut behind him.
"Was it Ms. Mallory? The one who kept sending you those things?" Winona asked softly.
Stefan nodded. "I called off the engagement, but she refuses to accept it."
"With her mental state... she really needs to see a psychiatrist," Winona said, her brow furrowed in concern.
"Kieran and his wife tried taking her to one, but she refuses any kind of treatment."
Winona didn't know what else to say, so she simply stayed by his side. Noticing his lips looked a little dry, she asked gently, "Are you thirsty? I can get you some water."
Stefan gave a faint hum of agreement.
Winona poured him a glass, handed it to him, and then placed it back on the nightstand when he finished.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed.
He pulled it out and looked at a work message. He tried to type a response, but with his left hand wrapped in gauze, it was too difficult.
Seeing his struggle, Winona offered, "Want me to help?"
Stefan handed the phone over.
As Winona opened his messaging app, she realized the most recent chats were all with top-level executives—except for one. Her own contact was pinned to the very top of his list.
She froze for a second.
Quickly schooling her expression, she asked as naturally as she could, "You have a few unread messages. Which one first?"
