The Wife He Forgot to Marry (Winona and Yule) novel Chapter 261

Mrs. Powell traveled to the Capital to visit Ophelia.

Seeing her arrive, Ophelia looked thrilled but said, "Mom, didn't I tell you it was nothing serious? You didn't have to come all this way."

Mrs. Powell set down the fruit basket she'd brought, sighing softly. "You took a knife for Stefan's mother. How could you hide something so huge from me? If I had known, I would have come immediately to take care of you."

Ophelia lowered her eyes, acting like the perfect, considerate daughter. "You've been so upset looking for my younger siblings. I was afraid that if you worried about me on top of everything else, it would be too much for your health. I didn't dare let anyone tell you."

"Ophelia, you're always too thoughtful for your own good." Mrs. Powell felt a pang of sympathy and gently patted her hand. "Does the wound still hurt?"

Ophelia shook her head. "Not anymore."

Mrs. Powell nodded, her thoughts briefly drifting to Lachlan.

"I don't know what's going on with Lachlan. I've been calling and texting him, but he hasn't replied at all. You got hurt, and he didn't even come to see you."

Lachlan had recently been thrown into a holding cell for sexually harassing Winona. Both Mr. Powell and Ophelia knew about this, but neither had breathed a word to Mrs. Powell.

As a result, Mrs. Powell simply assumed Lachlan was off traveling abroad, having too much fun to remember to check in with his family. After all, that kind of behavior was typical for him.

To protect Lachlan's image, Ophelia forced a smile. "He's probably just wrapped up in a new romance overseas. Mom, you know how Lachlan is—a total hopeless romantic. Whenever he falls in love, he forgets the rest of us exist. The moment he gets his heart broken, he'll remember us again. Don't worry about his lovesick brain."

Mrs. Powell nodded in agreement. "You're right. Boys his age need their space; hovering too much never helps. Oh, I had the chef make you some comforting hot soup. Eat it while it's warm."

As she sipped the soup, Ophelia carefully probed, "Mom, Margaret wants Stefan and me to be together. Do you think we're a good match?"

Over the years, Mrs. Powell had poured all her emotional energy into finding her missing twins. Her concern for her adopted children's personal lives was surface-level at best.

Back when Ophelia was engaged to Evander, Mrs. Powell hadn't shown strong support or opposition. After Evander passed away, Mrs. Powell had offered a few words of comfort but never bothered to help set her up with anyone new.
