Winona Jowett walked into her office building and immediately spotted Stefan Goddard waiting by the elevators.
Remembering what had happened last night, Winona had no idea how to face him. She kept her head down, pretending she hadn't seen him.
The elevator doors chimed open. The crowd of people around Winona began to file in. Seeing Stefan step inside, Winona purposefully lingered near the back, choosing not to board.
Just as the doors were about to close, Samantha hurried over from behind. "Hold the doors!"
The doors reopened, and Samantha quickly stepped in. Noticing Winona standing outside, she reached out and pulled her in. "Winona, hurry up! It's rush hour. You'll be waiting forever for the next one."
Before Winona could process what was happening, Samantha had dragged her straight into the elevator, planting her directly in front of Stefan.
Knowing that Stefan had definitely noticed her avoidance now, Winona lowered her head in sheer awkwardness.
Samantha finally spotted Stefan and smiled brightly. "Good morning, Mr. Goddard."
Stefan gave a faint, indistinct hum in response.
Samantha found the palpable distance between Winona and Stefan incredibly strange. They certainly hadn't acted like this before.
When the elevator reached her floor, Winona practically bolted for the exit. But in her haste, she misstepped. Her ankle twisted sharply, and she nearly went tumbling to the floor.
Stefan reached out, his hand firmly gripping her arm. He held her steady until she regained her balance, only releasing her when he was sure she wouldn't fall.
"Be careful, Ms. Jowett."
Her ears burned hot. She muttered a quick acknowledgment, didn't look back, and hurried straight toward her office.
Samantha watched the exchange, brimming with curiosity.
*Ms. Jowett?*
