Caught off guard, Winona lost her balance and hit the ground hard. A sharp, piercing pain flared up from her knee.
Ignoring the sting, she scrambled to her feet and limped forward as quickly as she could to put distance between herself and the building.
She grabbed a cab home. On the ride, her aunt sent her a text: *"Winona, Yulen called me today. He said he was going to pick you up after work and take us out to dinner. I hung up without giving him an answer. I'm not sure if he's going to try and find you, so just be careful."*
Winona replied: *"Okay, got it."*
Her knee was throbbing; she needed to get back and clean the wound immediately.
Limping into the elevator, she hit her floor button. Her mind wandered to her past with Yulen Locke, and a sudden wave of irony washed over her. She had moved on a long time ago. Yet he somehow still believed their relationship was salvageable. His arrogance was truly boundless.
When she reached her front door, she was just about to punch in her code when Yulen's voice called out from behind her.
"Winona."
Her hand froze over the keypad. She hadn't expected him to track her down this fast.
Winona turned around to face him. He looked even more smug and self-assured than before, his eyes practically gleaming with arrogant confidence.
Yulen stepped forward, a bouquet of yellow roses in his hands, flashing a triumphant smile. "Thank you for all the help you gave me before. I managed to secure investments from several major corporations in the capital, along with a massive government-backed medical project. It's all thanks to you."
Because of the initial projects with the Powell and Scully Groups, he had managed to network his way into elite circles in the capital, and his business had been skyrocketing ever since.
He had even been awarded Riverton's Outstanding Young Entrepreneur Award this year. He was on top of the world.
