Nikita glanced over at Greta, who was silently doing her homework in the corner, and her heart instantly ached.
No wonder the poor girl had been so withdrawn lately. She was being bullied.
It was her mother's fault, really, being so consumed by work that she neglected her daughter's emotional well-being.
The old woman let out a heavy sigh. "But the tuition at a school like that must be astronomical. Helena's salary couldn't possibly cover it."
"She wouldn't need to spend a dime. That kind of tuition is nothing to me. I'll cover it for Greta."
Nikita looked at Yulen, her eyes welling with profound affection and gratitude.
This boy truly went above and beyond for their family.
Seeing that he had completely won Nikita over, Yulen felt a surge of triumph.
He knew Winona was stubborn and difficult to coax, but shifting his strategy to win over her grandmother made things infinitely easier.
Winona adored her grandmother above anyone else. Eventually, she would obediently fall back in line and return to him.
Winona glared at Yulen, her eyes dripping with absolute contempt.
She knew exactly what game he was playing.
If she weren't terrified of stressing her grandmother out and compromising her recovery, she would have physically thrown him out of the apartment right then and there.
She took a deep breath, forcing the fury down.
If they were going to have a screaming match, it had to be far away from her aunt's house.
Throughout dinner, Yulen flawlessly played the role of the devoted, doting grandson-in-law.
He turned to Nikita, his tone perfectly pitched with faux sincerity. "My family is throwing a celebration party for me tomorrow night. I really wanted Winona to be there with me, but she said she's swamped with work and can't make it. I know I shouldn't push it, but part of me really wishes she would just compromise this one time. Nikita, do you think I'm being selfish for wanting that?"
Hearing this, Nikita put down her silverware and leveled a stern look at Winona. "Winona, since you're going to join the Locke family, you need to get your priorities straight. Family should always come first. No matter how busy you are with work, you need to make time to attend this party."
She was terrified that Winona was going to repeat her aunt's tragic mistakes—prioritizing her career over her marriage, only to end up divorced and alone.
Winona forced a painfully tight, synthetic smile. "Fine. I'll go."
