Ever since Maeve started constantly threatening suicide to manipulate Stefan, Violet had grown to absolutely loathe the girl. The two families had called off the engagement amicably, and the fault was entirely Maeve's to begin with. What right did she have to keep throwing tantrums?
Maeve's face crumpled in feigned hurt. "Grandma, you used to adore me. Why are you being so cold? I just wanted to come visit you."
"Spare me," Violet retorted dryly. "My heart can't take the stress. This is a lovely afternoon gathering, so please don't ruin it with any of your 'surprises'."
Desperate to prove herself, Maeve proudly presented a beautifully wrapped box. "Grandma, I had my family's Michelin-starred private chef bake these artisanal tea cakes for you. They're far superior to some random, amateur cookies. Try one!"
Violet didn't even touch the box. "Women my age shouldn't eat that much sugar. Take them back."
Rebuffed again, Maeve looked completely pathetic. She turned to Stefan, whining, "Stefan, look at her! She doesn't love me anymore!"
Stefan's face was completely devoid of emotion, but his words cut like glass. "If you know you aren't welcome here, why haven't you left?"
Maeve's face drained of color.
Even then, she refused to walk away from him, stubbornly sitting in the chair next to his, looking utterly miserable but refusing to leave.
Violet's eyes hurt just looking at her. Deciding to ignore her completely, she turned to Stefan. "Scoot over. Go sit next to Winona. We're playing a riddle game in pairs, and you two make the perfect team."
Stefan, always obedient to his grandmother, immediately swapped seats and sat right next to Winona.
Winona lowered her eyes, her heart racing too fast to look at him.
Maeve was furious but didn't dare make a scene, forcing herself to sit quietly. She had always prided herself on being brilliant—she had a master's degree in finance from a top-tier university abroad. There was no way these old ladies could stump her with a simple game.
