Roxana stepped right in front of Maeve, blocking her path to the bed.
"Do us all a favor and leave him alone. If you keep this up, you're going to end up killing him."
Maeve looked at her with wide, innocent eyes. "Roxana, you've got it all wrong. I had nothing to do with this. He got hurt because of Winona."
Roxana wasn't buying a second of it.
"Is there a single honest word that comes out of your mouth? The only person in this family dumb enough to believe you is my mother."
Margaret gasped. "How dare you speak to her like that?"
"I'm just stating facts, Mom," Roxana retorted, crossing her arms. "Even if her dad did our family a favor years ago, Stefan's debt is to him, not to Maeve."
Margaret sneered. "One more word of this nonsense and I'm shipping you straight back to the Capital!"
"The only one who needs to be shipped back is you!"
Violet's commanding voice echoed from the doorway.
Margaret froze. Turning around and seeing her mother-in-law, the memory of her recent "literary punishments" sent a shiver down her spine.
With her grandmother backing her up, Roxana practically beamed, slipping behind Violet and sticking her tongue out at Maeve.
Violet leveled a hard glare at Mrs. Mallory. "The Goddard family will always be grateful for what you did for us in the past. We will help you in any way we can. But repaying a debt does not mean my grandson has to pay with his life. Surely you understand that?"
Mrs. Mallory went pale. "Ma'am, she loves him. She would never do anything to hurt him."
"Don't play dumb with me. Let's lay it all out," Violet said, her voice dripping with ice. "Since the engagement was called off, Maeve has caused a scene exactly fifty-nine times. Every single time, Stefan pays the price. Last time it was his arm. This time he was almost burned alive."
