"I'm not that saintly," Winona retorted, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I don't just generously forgive someone after they've deliberately hurt me."
Yulen frowned. "She's not as bad as you think. Tallulah is a few years younger than you, so she doesn't always look at the big picture. I guarantee she never expected the consequences to be this severe."
Winona let out a cold laugh. "Young? She's about to be a mother. Are we really still calling her a child?"
Yulen choked on his words, entirely unable to formulate a rebuttal. But he couldn't just stand by and watch Tallulah give birth behind bars. It was too cruel. The mere thought of it made his expression darken.
"Winona, I strongly suggest you think about what I'm saying. Think about Rhea Sheffield. You wouldn't want to see her stuck on endless business trips, unable to return to Riverton, would you? With a single word from me, Rhea's career is over."
Winona glared at him, pure venom in her eyes.
So her suspicions were right. Rhea's grueling, health-ruining business trip had been orchestrated by Yulen all along.
"Yulen Locke, you are absolutely shameless."
She raised her hand, fully intending to slap the arrogance right off his face. But Yulen caught her wrist mid-air, his gaze just as icy.
"Winona, Rhea is always encouraging you to fight with me, isn't she? Sending her out of town to rough it for a bit is me being merciful."
The thought of this bastard bullying her best friend sent Winona's rage past the breaking point. She ducked her head and viciously bit down on Yulen's arm.
Yulen hissed in pain and shoved her away. Winona stumbled backward, hitting her head hard against the armrest of the sofa. A painful welt immediately formed on her forehead.
Ignoring his bleeding arm, Yulen rushed forward, his anger dissolving into sudden panic as he scooped her up. "Winona, are you okay? I didn't mean to—"
*Smack!*
Winona delivered a stinging slap straight across his cheek.
Yulen didn't dodge. He just stared at her, his eyes dark and heavy. He couldn't understand it. They used to be so deeply in love—why were they constantly at each other's throats now?
