The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 47

Winona found Eloise’s behavior baffling but paid her no mind, continuing with her work. Over the next few days, she turned in two exceptionally strong research reports, earning repeated praise from Jericho. Even the other lab members slowly began to change their attitudes toward her.

Feeling her position as the lab’s star seriously threatened, Eloise grew even more hostile toward Winona. She complained to Daphne, who replied, “That’s her trick. She must be using her looks to get someone else to do the work and then taking all the credit.”

Daphne refused to believe someone so young could be that capable.

Eloise found her friend’s logic convincing. Recalling how close Killian and Winona seemed, she became certain that he was the one helping her. Fueled by Eloise’s whispers, the other women in the lab distanced themselves from Winona even more, though Winona remained completely unfazed.

Killian was the only one in the lab who truly recognized Winona’s R&D skills and often discussed problems with her. After one such discussion, Killian remembered something. “Mr. Harper is giving a lecture at Apex University the day after tomorrow, and we’re all going. By the way, Winona, where did you graduate from?”

Winona smiled. “I graduated from Apex University.”

“That’s perfect,” Killian said. “You must know the area well, then. We’ll leave lunch plans to you.”

Winona nodded with a smile.

As one of the most respected figures in the medical field, Jericho’s upcoming lecture at Apex had attracted the attention of many pharmaceutical companies in Riverton. For these companies, R&D was paramount, and a partnership with Jericho's lab would be a massive boon. Yulen, of course, had received the news and was heading to Apex University with Tallulah.

“Thanks,” she said. After checking the presentation, she told him, “It starts in ten minutes. I’m going to use the restroom first.”

Killian nodded.

As Winona stepped out of the hall, she saw Yulen and Tallulah walking toward her. She had blocked Yulen’s number after leaving Locke Group and had no idea if he’d tried to contact her. She figured all his attention was on Tallulah and the baby anyway, and he likely had little time to spare for her.

It was for the best, she thought. They had never been a real couple, and now that whatever was between them was over, it was time to go their separate ways. Although she had resented him, she was slowly letting go, ready to start a new life with her own child.
