The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 53

He looked back at Tallulah’s pale face and stopped. Right now, Tallulah and the baby were what mattered most. As for Winona, she loved him too much to ever leave him for good. He could always find a chance to win her back later.

Rhea was furious when she learned the surveillance footage had been altered. She called Winona, fuming. “Winona, I’ve decided to quit. I’m going to fight them to the bitter end! The more they try to bully me into silence, the harder I’ll fight back.”

Winona worried Rhea would be at a disadvantage. After all, with the Locke family’s status in Riverton, it would be all too easy for them to crush an ordinary girl. But she couldn’t let Rhea suffer this injustice alone. “Okay,” she said firmly. “I’m with you. We’ll gather evidence together.”

“I can handle this,” Rhea insisted. “Don’t worry about me. Aren’t you working at the lab now? You must be busy, so just focus on that.”

Sensing her friend’s confidence, Winona agreed.

After hanging up, Rhea hesitated for a long time before her fingers trembled over a familiar number. “...You said you wanted me to be your companion for three months? I’m telling you now, I agree. But you have to do me a favor.”

A man’s voice, tinged with a playful wickedness, chuckled on the other end. “I never thought I’d see the day you’d ask me for help. Fine. Consider it done.”

At nine that evening, Winona finally left the lab. She picked up her phone from her desk and saw several missed calls from Nikita. She quickly called back. “Winona, Yulen came over for dinner tonight,” Nikita said. “I tried calling you, but you didn’t pick up. You should come over.”

Winona frowned, surprised that Yulen would visit Nikita. After hanging up, she rushed to Helena’s house.

Seeing her compliance, Yulen was relieved. He took her silence as a sign that she was finally backing down. In his mind, Winona had always been the reasonable one.

“If you want to stay at Helena’s, I won’t force you to come home,” he said, ruffling her hair just as he always did after a fight. “I’ll come get you when you’ve cooled down.” Then he left.

Later, Winona opened her phone and saw a Twitter post from Tallulah, published around six that evening. She was showing off a new blue diamond necklace, its design strikingly similar to the one Yulen had just given her. The only difference was that the gemstone on Tallulah’s necklace was easily twice the size of hers.

Hers was the secondary piece. Tallulah’s was the main event. It was utterly ridiculous. Without a moment’s hesitation, Winona listed the necklace on an online resale site.
