Terrified that Tallulah would discover her pregnancy, Winona clutched the medical chart tightly. Her defensive gesture only confirmed Tallulah’s suspicions, and she renewed her efforts to grab it.
Suddenly, a well-defined hand shot out, blocking Tallulah and pulling Winona behind its owner.
Winona froze when she saw who it was. Stefan.
Furious that someone had intervened, Tallulah sneered, “Is this your new boy toy? Looks like you’re not so in love with Yulen after all, Winona!”
Her words were so foul that Winona, without thinking, slapped her across the face.
Stung and enraged, Tallulah tried to hit back, but the tall man protecting Winona made it impossible for her to get close. All she could do was glare at Winona with murderous intent.
Blythe rushed over, pointing an accusing finger. “How could you hit Tallulah? You vicious, ungrateful brat!”
Stefan looked at them coldly, and the warning in his expression was unmistakable. Daunted, Blythe and Tallulah swallowed their anger and hurried away.
Winona turned to Stefan. “Mr. Goddard, thank you for that. But… what are you doing here?”
“This morning, my grandmother had her driver bring you some pastries,” he explained. “Your neighbor told him you had collapsed and been taken to the hospital. I just got back to Riverton, so I came to see how you were.”
Winona was touched. Violet and Stefan had been incredibly kind to her.
“I’m fine now, really,” she said with a smile. “I was just about to leave. If you haven’t had lunch, let me treat you.”
Stefan nodded in agreement.
They chose a restaurant with a light menu, as Winona didn't have much of an appetite. Stefan poured her a glass of warm water. “How have you been, Ms. Jowett? Are you settling in well at Mr. Harper's lab?”
Winona nodded. “Yes, Mr. Harper has been very good to me. And I still haven’t properly thanked you for recommending me, so lunch is on me.”
Stefan didn't waste his breath arguing. He motioned to his bodyguards to escort Maeve back to the capital.
As the bodyguards took her by the arms, Maeve struggled. “Stefan, don’t you forget! My father saved your life! You promised you would marry me!”
“Get her out of here,” Stefan commanded, his voice even colder.
The bodyguards dragged Maeve to the car and drove off.
Once she was gone, Stefan turned to Winona and apologized. “I’m sorry. That was my former fiancée. She was out of line.”
Winona had heard him say he was against marriage, so she was surprised to learn he’d had a fiancée. But she had no desire to pry into his private life.
“It’s okay,” she said. “I’m not bothered.”
