As she finished, Tallulah lowered her head, her eyes filled with sorrow.
Yulen glanced at Winona, but she didn’t even look his way. A strange sense of loss washed over him.
Ultimately, Yulen’s lawyer arrived and bailed them all out.
Outside the station, Yulen grabbed Winona’s arm as she was about to get into Rhea’s car. “Winona, tonight was a misunderstanding.”
She turned to face him. Under the streetlights, his eyes were as deep and affectionate as they had always been. But she had known for a long time that he was lying to her.
She gave a sarcastic laugh. “Was it?”
Rhea flipped Yulen the middle finger before pulling Winona into the car. “Let’s go, let’s go! Don’t waste your breath on him!”
As the car pulled away, Yulen was left with a strange emptiness he couldn’t explain.
Tallulah tugged on his sleeve, whispering an apology. “I’m sorry, Yulen. I shouldn’t have been so high-profile. It’s my fault. Should I go explain to Winona?”
“No, don’t,” Yulen said flatly. Winona had always trusted and relied on him. Hearing those things tonight must have been hard for her. He decided to let her cool down. When he had time later, he would explain everything properly, and she would understand. He was sure of it.

After work, Winona stopped by Valor’s Braised Beef to pick up an order. Both Nikita and Helena loved the beef from this particular shop, but it was too far for them to visit often. Since Winona’s lab was nearby, she would pick some up whenever she got off work early.
“Won’t that be too expensive?” Nikita asked.
“I’m an investor in the resort, so it’s free for us,” Yulen explained.
Only then did Nikita agree. “Alright. That’s very thoughtful of you, Yulen.”
Seeing Nikita so happy, Winona couldn't bring herself to break the news about her and Yulen. As she walked him out, her demeanor was cold and distant. Yulen sighed. “I know I’ve been busy, but don’t overthink things. It’s not what you think with Tallulah. We’ll have a good time this weekend, and I’ll make it up to you. When you’re ready, you can come back home, okay?”
Winona’s brow furrowed. A thought suddenly struck her. “I sent you a message on my birthday. Did you see it?”
Yulen tried to recall that day. He and Tallulah had been stargazing when his phone had tumbled down the mountainside. Most of his message history was lost, so he never saw it. “What did you send?” he asked, but just then, his phone rang.
