Winona washed her hands in the restroom and came out to sit beside Nikita. Nikita’s eyes crinkled into a smile. “It’s so good to have the whole family together. It's nice that Helena has company for her birthday. See? Now you understand why I didn’t want her to divorce Matteo.”
Winona didn’t know how to respond, so she stayed silent. She suspected Helena had only taken Matteo back out of resignation, not genuine forgiveness. The wounds of betrayal don't heal that easily. After dinner, Winona left Helena’s. A message from Rhea popped up, inviting her for a drink. Winona initially refused, but after Rhea’s persistent pleas, she gave in. At the bar, Rhea pulled her to a table and introduced her to a man. “This is Harlan, my boyfriend. Harlan, this is Winona, my best friend.”
Winona saw a handsome man in a black shirt, his alluring, almond-shaped eyes hinting at both charm and mystery. A gut feeling told her he was dangerous. She had no idea how Rhea met him but made a mental note to warn her to be careful. Rhea handed her a glass of juice. “You can have this.”
A low, husky female voice drifted from the stage. Winona looked over in pleasant surprise; it was one of her favorite singers.
Rhea grinned. “Now you know why I insisted you come, right? Some rich guy paid a fortune to bring her in tonight for an anniversary celebration. Maybe the happy couple will even come on stage later. We can watch the show.”
Winona focused on the music, her emotions rising and falling with the melody. After her last song, the singer bowed. “And now, please welcome the loving couple who invited me here tonight!”
Amidst the cheers, Yulen and Tallulah walked onto the stage. Tallulah clutched the bouquet of blue roses, the sapphire ring glittering on her finger, her face a mask of shy happiness.
Winona’s expression went cold.
Tallulah glanced at Yulen, too afraid to speak. One of her friends, however, blurted out, “They’re a couple! They were just having a nice time on stage when this psycho rushed up, calling them a mistress and a cheater. She’s insane!”
Rhea, furious, looked ready to lunge again but was held back by Winona.
Yulen shot a warning glare at Tallulah’s friend, who immediately shrank back, realizing her mistake and slapping her own mouth.
Tallulah bit her lip and forced a smile. “My friends and I had too much to drink. None of what we said tonight should be taken seriously. Actually, Yulen and I are just colleagues. The whole confession thing… that was just my wishful thinking.”
