Winona laughed into the phone. "Thank you for such an incredible gift, Forrest, but we don't exactly have any kids yet."
"The companion robot is named Pip," Forrest said smoothly over the line. "He actually has a pet companion mode, too. You can set him up to keep Biscuit company."
That... was actually a brilliant idea.
Winona walked over to the sleek little robot. With a few quick taps, she adjusted his settings.
Pip immediately recalibrated, turning to face her with an outstretched, articulated hand. "Hello, Ms. Jowett. I am Pip."
Pleasantly surprised by his polite programming, Winona shook his robotic hand.
Pip's internal sensors instantly locked onto Biscuit. He rolled over to the small dog and gently patted its head. "Hello, Biscuit. I am Pip. I will be your companion as you grow."
Biscuit tilted his head, eyeing his new mechanical friend with utter confusion.
But within minutes, Pip had won the dog over. He washed Biscuit's food bowl, refilled his water, and cheerfully announced, "Biscuit, it is time to hydrate!" Once the dog finished drinking, Pip engaged him with a series of interactive squeaky toys.
Fascinated, Winona recorded a quick video and sent it to Forrest. *Pip is honestly the best pet sitter ever.*
Forrest replied a moment later. *Entertaining a pet is simple for him. Whenever you and Stefan have a baby, that's when you'll really see what he can do.*
When Stefan Goddard got home that evening, he stopped in his tracks at the sight of the robot. "What's this?"
"It's a children's companion robot Forrest developed," Winona explained with a smile. "Since we don't have kids yet, we've got him on dog-duty."
Pip rolled right up to Stefan and extended a hand. "Hello, Mr. Goddard. I am Pip."
Stefan raised an eyebrow but shook the robot's hand.
"I will be staying in this home to take excellent care of Biscuit," Pip stated politely.
"Noted," Stefan murmured.
Greetings concluded, Pip whirred back over to Biscuit to resume their game of tug-of-war.
Stefan hung up his coat and dropped onto the sofa next to Winona. "Forrest has serious engineering talent. If this robot hits the market, it's going to be a massive success."
Forrest's ears burned red. He ducked out of the loud private room into the hallway. "Hey, Simone. What's up?"
"You're a lightweight, Forrest Kane," Simone Sterling's voice came through, filled with fond exasperation. "Don't drink too much. I'm coming to pick you up. What time are you guys wrapping up?"
His eyes softened with affection. "Probably another hour or so. Don't worry, I'll just grab a cab."
"Absolutely not. You're too gorgeous and talented to be wandering around tipsy. What if someone tries to steal you away?"
A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Alright. I'll call you when we're done."
He hung up and turned to head back to his team. But as he rounded the corner of the hallway, he froze. Two men were aggressively yanking a visibly intoxicated young woman down the corridor. She was slurring, trying to shove them away, clearly unwilling to go with them.
Without a second thought, Forrest stepped forward to intervene.
In the ensuing scuffle, something heavy and brutally hard smashed into his left arm. Agony flared hot and sharp, blinding him. The world tilted, and he collapsed to the floor, unconscious.
Giselle Reed stared coldly down at Forrest's unmoving body. She glanced at the two men she'd hired. "Let's go."
